Hey guys,

I'm having an issue with my computer : it randomly shuts down sometimes. It started a couple of weeks ago and now it does it once a day or every two days. It can be while I'm gaming, working or even when the PC is idle. No blue screen or anything.

Once it shuts down, it tries to boot up again indefinitely : the power button and the motherboard light up, the fans start spinning and then it shuts down again less than one second after, with a small "click". It tries again 5 seconds later and so on.

To start it up again I have to unplug it (or just use the switch on the PSU as I found out later), leave it like that for a few seconds, plug it back in and boot up again. After this it works again for the rest of the day.

I checked the Event Viewer and there's nothing at the time of the shutdowns or before, the only message I have is something like "The last shutdown was unexpected" when it starts up again.

My setup :

  • ■ Corsair Graphite 600TM Case
    ■ ASUS Z170 PRO Gaming
    ■ Intel Core i5-6600K (no OC)
    ■ Cooler Master Hyper 212X
    ■ GeForce® GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G
    ■ G.Skill Ripjaws V - 8Go (2x4Go) 3000Mhz
    ■ Antec HCG - 520W

I should mention that I replaced most of my computer at the end of 2016 after motherboard-related problems, only the PSU and case are "old" (from Nov. 2012).

I thought this might be either the PSU that is failing or maybe due to some electrical problems in my flat (the electrical setup there is quite old), but I wanted to ask if this kind of issue reminded anyone of anything, and if I should prioritize buying a new PSU or a UPS.

Thanks in advance !

Solution
I would associate the problem with power. My initial instinct would be a faulty PSU although I would personally expect more life from the SeaSonic built High Current Gamer, the symptoms do fit.
