I have a i54690k that I want to overclock on my motherboard which is the msi h81m-p33. I can adjust the cpu to 4.2 ghz but I cant find the voltage settings anywere. I have the cooler master seidon 120v ver.2 as cooler but with that I get temps of 75/83 at 4.2 ghz. Am I doing something wrong?

Your motherboard uses a chipset (H81) that doesnt support the advanced overclocking. Some H81 motherboards, such as yours, allow some preset options. But sadly, advanced overclocking on a non-overclockable motherboard is hard, and a bit risky. Those boards aren't really designed to overclock. The voltage control units may not be as high quality as better boards. I used to have an Asrock motherboard with the H97 chipset, and that couldnt overclock either. it had presets, but i couldnt adjust voltages. If you want to get into the advanced overclocking stuff, look for a new motherboard with the Z97 chipset.

I use a MSI Z97 Krait Edition motherboard and the same CPU as well and I got up to 4.3 GHz. So, if you really want to...

Agreed. I got it to an identical clock with a simple clock change through MSI's command center. After that, as you surmised, more complicated changes need to happen which my Z97 PC Mate or the Z97 Krait can handle but your board can not.
