High CPU usages

Hello,

I noticed that my CPU usages for all cores are very high when gaming. For example, whilst playing Forza 6, cores 1 and 3 are always on 100%. Cores 2 and 4 are usually anywhere between 50-70%, and the usages for these 2 cores are constantly spiking. On any other game, the overall CPU usage percentage is 60-70% all the time, and the usages are constantly spiking again.

When playing a game, and the CPU usages spike, I can see the game stutter. It's as though the CPU usages are causing my games to be stutter. My temperatures are fine; my CPU never goes beyond 50 degrees, and neither does my GPU. Could my CPU be a bottleneck to my system?
Thanks.

I have an i5 4460, and a GTX 1050 Ti.

Games are designed to use a certain amount of cores. Some heavy-duty games can utilize four cores, while others use two. Also, it depends on the game if your CPU is a bottleneck. The 4460 isn't really "outdated" since youre using a mid-range GPU like the GTX 1050 ti. Those two parts should work perfectly together without one being a bottleneck. (If you had the 4460 and a GTX 1080 ti, the CPU might be a little bottleneck...)

Forza 6 is a pretty demanding game on both CPU and GPU. I think the stuttering could be caused by both the GPU and CPU on such a demanding game. I dont think one is a real big bottleneck. But since you said that the game stutters when the CPU usage spikes, I think that the CPU might be a small bottleneck. With that said, Forza is a pretty demanding game. In most other games, your CPU really wouldnt be a bottleneck.

Thanks for the reply.

Forza is a pretty demanding game, but I can run it at max settings at constant 60fps. But then again, I can run a game like Need for Speed Most Wanted (2005 keep in mind) with the same problem. This happens not only with my 1050 Ti, but also my old GT 705.

Hmm. In that case, it may be more of a CPU bottleneck than I thought. The GTX 1050 ti is WAY better than the GT 705! And if you are still having FPS hits when the CPU spikes, it points at the CPU.

If you really want to upgrade, you could head for some of the I7 CPUs for your motherboard. Look for I7 processors with socket LGA 1150. I use an i5 4690k which is amazing, but it wouldnt be worth the money if you dont overclock it. (the "K" means its meant to overclock...)

Another option is to mess around with settings. Certain settings have a big impact on CPU. For example, in some games, Shadows are controlled by the CPU. In a game called Planetside 2, turning shadows off will triple your FPS! But it depends on the game. Google search Forza 6 CPU optimizations or general optimizations and you will get a good idea of what settings could reduce stuttering,

Haha, yes, the GT 705 is a pretty bad card and that's the reason I used it.

I'd get a new processor, but they're fairly expensive. The CPU you have is in the £200 range and I don't have that kind of money. I want to upgrade my motherboard anyway so I suppose a new CPU would be needed.

I've changed every setting, and even run it on the lowest. There's still a stutter. After playing BeamNG, I saw my GPU usage drop, along with my frame rate, which caused a similar stutter as to Forza. So now I have one game being affected by CPU usages, and another being affected by GPU usages...
