I know a little bit about networking, but need to know more. Don't need industry certs but I want to learn enough to set up a business network, including servers, access points, routers, decent security measures, etc. I have spent hours looking for a good book that is current, fairly comprehensive, and gets into real world setup. I make and test my own Cat6 cables, built my own gaming computer, can program Arduinos, but I still get stumped setting up advanced router functions, subnets, port forwarding, etc.

Perhaps I'm not searching correctly, or missing the proper bit of jargon...
I'd like a resource that explains subnets in useful detail, real world examples of router/switch/access point networks, setting up a server, firewall and security measures and similar topics.

Is such a book really that hard to find? Any help would be appreciated, I'm pulling my hair out...
Thank you,
Bryan

Network+ Guide to Networks Seventh Edition By Jill West, Tamara Dean, and Dean Andrews..... Cisco: Introduction to Networks & Cisco: Routing and Switching Essentials if you want some security the Security+ Guide to Network Security Fundamentals... these will cover the basics. It's all about managed switching and routing knowing your network how to connect, set up, and manage those books will also help prepare you for Net+, Sec+, and CCENT should you ever want to take them you can also look into Cisco Networking Academy and Test Out both can be fout at netacad.com or testout.com... I can't offer any help with your server because I don't know what kind of server it will be or what kind of OS it will be running but there is literature out...

the books that I recommended won't get him even close to being prepared for the CCNA just the CCENT (ICND1) which is switching networks and basic routing the CCENT pt 2 or ICND2 (once you have both you have you CCNA or you can take both together for the CCNA test) is more advanced routing, ACL's, and more wide area infrastructure related tech and services those books will help him learn how to connect his network. and I actually think there is a cisco book specifically for a SOHO I'll have to check when I go back to the lab on monday but I beleive Ive seen it there

There are a couple of good books, my favorites are:

1. Computer Networking: A top-down approach by Kurose and Ross - Teaches network principles.

2. Computer Networks: A System Approach Larry L. Peterson and Bruce S. Davie - This book is more systems-oriented. It include topics like network design and architecture, the concepts of switching, routing, and internetworking, network security and firewalls and more..

I think that in your case where you don't have a lot of knowledge in networking, you should consider using a network testing service like Ixia to validate your network set up. They can test your network infrastructure and performance and perform security tests.
