Internet download speed

My internet plan is 8mbps
I'm not sure if this is megabit or megabyte

but when I'm downloading things like steam games, the max download speed i get is around 1.7 mbps

Why is that?

ISPs state speeds as bandwidth in "megabits" per second, and there are 8 megabits in a megabyte.

So for a bandwidth of 8 megabits/sec your download speed should be around 1 megabyte/sec max.

So you're actually doing slightly better than the arithmetic dictates, maybe your bandwidth just had a high spike when you got that download speed. At 8 megabits/sec bandwidth your download should be only 1 Mb/sec max, depending on the server you are downloading from & time of day.

Bottom line is, there is nothing wrong with your speed if you've only got 8 megabit internet service.
