New Build keeps freezing

Hi guys,

So I posted a thread last week about having issues with the mobo and the CPU on my new build.

The specs for the new build are:

CPU: Intel Core i7-7700K
GPU: ASUS STRIX Gaming GeForce GTX 1060 06GB
Motherboard: ASROCK H170 PRO4/HYPER
RAM: Corsair 16GB KIT, DDR4, 2133MHz, CL13 Vengeance LPX
PSU: Corsair CX750

The original issue was the BIOS weren't updated to recognise the 7th gen CPU. So I got myself a 6th gen one, updated the BIOS and now the mobo recognises the i7. So that's great.

The issue I'm having now, is that the PC freezez really often, and most often during the boot screen. I've managed to get through to Windows and log in a few times to try and run some driver updates and such, but the PC usually freezes at some point during the updates.

I'm a bit worried I might havw put too much thermal paste on the CPU since in the BIOS it shows the temp at 65 degrees, I got another program to monitor temp within windows and there it showed me temperatures for all 4 cores, which never went above 31 for more than a second or two.

I'm not sure if CPU overheating could be causing this, or if it even is overheating.

Would appreciate any tips or tricks to try out.

Thanks!

Okay so I have had a look at your MOBO and your RAM seems to be compatible with it so that's good. Your CPU should be fine. However, I know that when a computer boots but has problems booting, like freezing, it can normally be the Hard Drive that is your problem. I suggest taking it out plugging it back in. If that doesn't work maybe try making sure you got the Hard Drive plugged into the right SATA cable (there can be faster SATA cables: 6GB/S,4GB/S it depends on your MOBO). If not your only option is to take it to a technician in your local area and asked them if the build is correctly built and they may be able to help you further.

The temperature is ok. If should only worry about it if the temperature is over 80C (more here).

  • Have you already tried to reset the BIOS to the default settings after the update?
Have you already tried to reinstall the OS?

Do you have another PC or laptop to download stuff in case we need to execute more tests?

I did reset the settings to default post update, haven't tried reinstalling the OS as I have it from a download if nally, so would have to get my hans on a disc.

I have a laptop and enough parts to build a second rig if necessary :D

Ok, you don't need to reinstall the Windows 10 now. Actually, I'm listing steps so we can track down the source of the issue:

    Go to http://releases.ubuntu.com/trusty/.
    Download the file "ubuntu-14.04.5-desktop-amd64.iso".
    Follow this tutorial: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows
After creating a bootable USB stick, plug the pen drive in your system and try to boot from the USB instead of the HDD/SDD.
Select the option "try Ubuntu without installing". Wait it load.
Now, try to do some basic s***t like open the LibreOffice, Firefox and surf on the internet. Play some videos on YouTube, go to Toms Hardware.

If you do not experience any freezes in the last step, then the source of the problem is on the Windows 10 OS and you will probably need to reinstall it.
If the problem is in your hardware, you will probably have difficult to boot Ubuntu and it will freeze at some point.

The previous procedure may be extensive, but it is better than reinstalling the Windows 10 (and all stuff and drivers) and later figure out it wasn't the real problem.

I have two hard drives plugged in. Ine is still empty, the other pretty much full, has windows and all my other programs installed on it. Is it possible that the empty one would be faulty or is it geberally always the one with things installed on it?

It is always the one with things installed on it, because the problem comes only when there is an essential corrupted file (software issue) necessary for the system or a bad cluster (hardware issue).

Right so I just tried the old SATA cables I was using before, 6GB black cables, I had swapped them for red ones, same bandwidth I think though. The PC froze at Mobo loading screen again.

I'll try downloading and booting over the Unbutu now see if that works.

So I just tried booting from the Ubuntu USB, but it froze on the Loading screen with the four white dots, which turn red. I'm not sure how long the lead screen takes, so I'll leave it a little longer, but I'm sure it's frozen again.

I'm guessing this means the Hard Drive is the problem. Do I straight up have to get a new one? Is there a way to fix this one or?

Hi Guys, I've tried running Ubuntu multiple times, always froze at loading screen so definitely isn't the OS that's causing the issue.

Are there any steps I can take to identify the issue with the HD? Are there any programs I could run to clean the disk or repair it without clearing all the data on it?

Hey guys, took it to the IT Support team, turns out I didn't reinstall the OS on the new mobo and since I swapped from AMD to Intel the whole system just crashed.

So got a new SSD and chucking the system on there, is forking fine now.

Thanks for all the help!
