Hello, I want to undervolt my CPU to lower the temps.

However, I dont seem to be able to go any lower than 1.230 which is pretty high, dropping after this I start to see crashes. Any idea why I can't go lower?

CPU: I7 7700K stock speed
Motherboard: Gigabyte gaming k3 z270

Solution

i didn't touch anything in the bios, because i have an MSI motherboard so i can downclock and undervolt the CPU from their program ''MSI COMMAND CENTER'' ive just downclocked the cpu and undervolt it so I'm pretty sure i have hyperthreading but the boost to 4.5Ghz i don't think so lol because i downclock it to 4.2Ghz so its...

How come people are getting it down to as low as 1.100?

Dont know, but 1.230 still seems way too high, something must be wrong in bios or a simple setting.

Just curious, where are you getting 1.230v is too high? Is somebody spreading that around?

Turning boost technoligy of has already given me 1.170 voltage with no crashes.

I'm not running lower clock speed, it's still at 4.2
I just turned off boost (it was set to auto boost, 4.4) and 1.170 seems to be very stable.

1.230 is high as other people are getting way lower, and having it at 1.230 gives me around 85c during 100% load. Not that it's that dangerous temps, I would just want it to sit around 75c.

Well do you think it's worth keeping it and getting 85c on 100% load?

Depends. What are you doing exactly.

I'd say leave turbo boost on if you notice your workflows slowing down more than you want. You can run 100% load at 85C for years and be fine. However it might still shorten the lifespan, but were talking 10 years vs 8 years (if run 100% 24/7), so it's still insanely long for a CPU.

I'm running 4.20ghz , with turbo boost on. At 1.85. Been running prime95 for 1 hour now and no crashing.

Ive heard motherboards have an effect on how much you can undervolt and i think its right because i can run my i7 7700k at 4.2Ghz at 1.096V
Stable, and on 4.5Ghz at 1.176V btw those are the minimal voltages that i can get the cpu running at stable.
My MotherBoard is:MSI Z270 gaming m3

honestly, ive never subscribed to the stress test for hours approach. personally, if i can run 2 different stress tests for at least an hour each stable, then im good. its mostly just because i dont want to go 8+ hours without being able to use my pc, and i dont want to leave it running while im not around under 100% load for hours.

I have the gigabyte gaming z270 k3 one, couldnt get it under 1.180. Do you have hyperthreading, and boost technoligy on?

I'm at 1.095 right now, 10min testing as I go. Trying to bottom out before more rigorous testing. One thing people should think about with 7700k is minding other related voltages in relation to speeds, voltages and temps. MSI for instance cranks things way up and that's what I'm doing tonight/tomorrow bring everything down, everything.
