The HP Envy 17-j099nr has a factory installed SATA II 3Gbps HDD.

I'd like to find out from someone with direct experience if the laptop will support SATA III 6Gbps connection to a SATA III SSD if I install one.

The Envy 17-j099nr does support SATA III 6Gbps speeds. I went out and bought a new SATA III drive and installed it. Then confirmed that it connected at SATA III speed with HWINFO.
