I apologize if this is not the correct area for this question:

I just went to windows 10 from 7, I am on a clean install on a bran new HDD.

Windows automatically updated my RX480 with a driver from 2016 "16.300.2311.0"
When I tell windows to look for updates, it says it is up to date and has the best driver.
If I download the latest AMD 17.2.1 from a month ago, I first remove the old driver, install the new and it says "your graphics card awaits"

Well within 5 seconds my screen flicks off/on and then BAM, the old 16.300.2311.0 driver is back on!

I asked a microsoft tech, we tried stuff for hours, updating builds doing it different ways NOTHING. Is anyone else experiencing this? Thank you.

OKAY so, it seemed to have worked! However strangely I ended up with a different driver from the one I had pre downloaded on my desktop... did DDU you get me one? That is kind of ODD, but at least its a more modern driver.
I really appreciate the help... windows 10 has been a major pain for me so far over 7. I can't even get win.10 to recognize my printer when I plug it in... it has been a nightmare. Getting Kernel errors all kinds of stuff, and this is my third install on 3 different HDDs!

I went to 10 from 7 home because I needed more memory... i'm on the market for win 7 pro or ultimate now... I really don't like this OS.

Kernel erros could be a memory issue, I'd suggest running memtest for a while and see if anything comes up. Sometimes running a different program or in this case OS, can reveal some otherwise hidden hardware issues.

DDU doesn't get you a driver, it's possible that Windows updated the driver, or maybe AMD updated the driver package. Either way, glad it's working well.

If you run the driver/software installation from the printers manufacturer, does it detect it during that process? Windows 10 has a lot of compatibility, but it's not perfect (not by a long shot), but it could just need the driver to recognize it.

Windows 10 takes some getting used to, for me, I'm sick of MS changing things around with every content update. but when the OS is running well, Ive found it to be more stable than Windows 7 and world's better than 8.

I do have new ram in here... I am going to try a mem test. I will try going to HP for the printer driver... the device manager shows a driver for the correct printer, but it has the explanation point warning on it, and windows does not "see it" when you try to print to it. I'll have to toy around I guess. Thank you.

I ran the test right after the last message I sent. I have 2 8 gig modules. the test went to 10 percent and stayed there for about a half hour or more, and a few dots "artifacts" showed up on the screen. The computer seemed to be doing nothing, I tried pressing f1 for settings or whatever it says at the bottom but it did not respond.
How long is that supposed to take? A few of the kernel messages I am getting is sleep mode related... which is strange since I have sleep mode disabled.

I ran the test again, no issues at all... not sure what happened the first time.
I bought from newegg, already asked them about it, they are willing to take it back.
Problem is if I sent out my ram, i'm stuck with nothing for like 12 days! I don't have back up ram at the moment... I know "boo hoo no computer, grow a pair" right? Well I don't really do TV, I do mostly stuff on my PC so its very irritating to not have it up and running...

Even do my banking/health insurance on here. Major pain to have no access.

I know what a PITA no computer can be, I hate it when mine is down. If it ran without issue, then it might be something else. If sleep mode is turned off and it's a sleep mode error, then we need to test other things.

What exactly is the error you are getting? If you don't know, feel free to post it in a new thread when you can get it and we can help. Get this fixed for you ASAP.

Alright cool! I just got done with a few rounds of Battlefield with no crashing stuttering or any indication of memory problems... so we will see. I originally had problems with this motherboard where both with my last ram sticks, and these current ones the only way I could get windows not reserve half of it, is to flip flop them (trade positions)
Happened on 7 and 10 with two different sticks... I found that weird, so I could have a funky motherboard.

suddenly I have "perflib" errors popping up all over
rdyboost
I'm not seeing error codes on these... like I did on 7. but man this thing has all kinds of stuff going off. Even a couple .Netframework errors. Afterburner is showing a ton of sidebyside errors hahahahaha. I think I should stop looking on here!
Thank you so much for all the help though. I will re post on here when I learn a little more about the issue.

I just wanted to point out, I think my motherboard is the problem. WHen I first put this system together, windows was reserving half my ram, and I could not figure out why. Someone on here said try flip flopping their slots and that worked... for a while. When I put in the new ram I got with windows 10 over 7, same thing happened right off the bat... and now it happened again. I think my ram dimm or slots are flackey...
Unfortunately I am 4 days passed returns on newegg... so i'm going to have to buy another board and send this one off to MSI for warranty, and then sell the refurbished board!

AHH, didn't know this was a MSI board....I have had nothing but trouble with their motherboards and have completely written them off. On a relatives recommendation I tried one recently and the SATA controlled died 2 months after the system was built. They have replaced the board twice now and it looks like the same issue is occurring, but out of warranty now.

I would replace the board with one from ASUS or ASRock and yeah, sell the refurb they send you.

You could try seeing if there is a BIOS update to address the issue, but if the board errors during the update, it becomes a paperweight, so probably best to just RMA it for now.

Shoot! I really like the board for what it is. It looks nice, has system fans in the right place tons of USBS and bla bla bla.
ASUS or ASrock? What about gigabyte?
I have heard a ton of horror stories about ASUS, just about everyone I know that has owned one had to send it in for warrnaty. Unfortunately I can't RMA this board to newegg, just barely too late.

Got any boards in mind for me? I'm running:
AMD-fx8350
single rx480

This whole windows not recognizing stuff is driving me crazy! Now I am noticing windows sees my HP2009m monitor as a "generic PNP"
THE FREAK!?!?! Why did windows 7 work so much better?

I have been using ASUS and ASRock for 24 years (literally) and have never had a motherboard issue. The only issue I've had was a GPU and they fixed it and got it back to me within 7 business days. I've replaced many MSI and ECS boards, only a few Gigabyte. I've never used Gigabyte boards and have only encountered them when they failed so can't speak to their quality.
This has been my experience with these brands, I'm sure there are others with different ones.

As for the monitor, is there a specific feature or driver for it? I'd say 90% of the time it will just say generic PNP monitor unless there is soemthing to give Windows more information.

For a new board, how about:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Motherboard: ASRock 990FX Extreme4 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($112.03 @ Amazon)
Total: $112.03
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

If you go with the cheaper 970 chipset, you might run into an issue of needing a BIOS update for compatibility with your CPU. The 990 chipset does not have that issue. If you want to save money, you can check eBay for a used one.

hm on windows 7 it noticed exactly what my monitor was without doing a darn thing, same with every device I plugged in... I would never have gone to 10 if it wasn't for a couple programs that wouldn't work on 7, and the fact that my home edition only supports 8gig ram. I'm not sure about drivers because i've never had to look for one, but the fact that it also doens't see the printer is a major let down.
Windows 10 has been a hardware struggle all the way through..

So go for a 990 chipset you think? I may try out the ASRock... I have never really heard of them. Their prices are very decent.
I doubt it matters, but a "gaming" motherboard would be nice, that has more space and a re-inforced PCI slot, I enjoy that sort of thing.

newwegg has the ASrock 990fx extreme3... is that similar to what you can recommend?

Windows 10 Home supports up to 128gb of RAM while Windows 7 Home Premium supported up to 16gb.
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_upgrade/whats-the-maximum-ram-support-for-windows-10-home/b1078908-1932-4c12-b5fd-bdcd58984333

The 990 chipset was a last one released and supported all the FX CPU's without need of a BIOS upgrade (except the 9XXX CPU's which very few boards could handle the power draw)

The difference I see in the boards is the Extreme 3 has few connections, but unless you have tons of USB devices and old IDE devices, you wont miss anything. Either will server you well.

As tot he printer issue, I'm thinking that the issue might be related to the board you are using. Might work better when you change the motherboard and do a fresh Windows install. I know you have done fresh installs before, but you will want to do it again with changing the motherboard.

Is the Windows 7 you upgraded an OEM (installed by dell, HP, etc.) or retail? If OEM, you might have a problem with activation and need to call MS and tell them you changed the motherboard due to failure. If retail, you should be able to move it without issue. Windows ties itself the the motherboard.

My windows 7 was a full version. I got the printer drivers working!
I ended up getting a very good deal on another MSI board "ugh I know"
its a pro carbon, i'm ganna give it a try. I was ready to pull the trigger on the ASRock but man I really like MSI bios, and all the plugs are in the same spot.
Windows 7 home is a full version, and I just got a full version of windows 10 home.
My HP moniter is still seen as generic, but going on HPs site i'm seeing that they do not have windows 10 drivers for it. Not a big deal. Will windows 7 or vista drivers work on 10? I heard modern windows checks all drivers for compatibility when it installs, and they will either work or they won't.

Dud you are so helpful man, thanks very much. I will definitely need more help in the future.

Strange, I bought the cheapest MSI gaming board they had, and it ran the CPU no problem. I did not know of that issue... damn AMD.

I had bought a Samsung Evo SSD 850, I got it run on this machine, but the speeds were not good at all. I did all the rapid mode, fresh installs. AHCI enabled everything looked good, but samsung magician says "your system is not optimized correctly for full performance"

I put it in my fathers lap top "intel chipset" BAM, works perfectly lightening fast with no issues. IN another thread I might have to have you recommend to me an SSD that plays well with AMD chipsets.

Glad you have the full windows 7 version, it will make the whole process easy. Also happy to see you got the printer up, it was probably an issue with the last board.

As for the monitor, if there is a Windows 7 driver for it, it should work. If it gives you noise about compatibility, then just run it with Windows 7 compatibility settings and as administrator. That should clear it up.

It's not really an AMD thing about the BIOS upgrade needed, Intel has done this many times as well. In fact many Z170 motherboards are not compatible with the 7XXX series CPU's until it gets a BIOS update, but they still sell them for those CPU's

Without knowing more about how the SSD is connected on both machines, I'd guess that on the AMD board, it's connected to a SATA 2 port and on the Intel a SATA 3. This would cause the speed issue you describe. Plus, you need to remember that even the newest 990 AMD chipset is over 4 years old. AMD let their desktop CPU's and chipset ride for a long time while getting Ryzen ready. They only developed the APU's and left the FX series alone.

The Samsung 850 Evo is still one of the best SSD's on the market, but the newer 950 and 960 is much faster, but also much more expensive. There are no SSD'd that have a CPU or chipset preference, so just have to figure out where the weak link is. I'm using a 512gb 850 EVO M.2 SSD in my laptop and I have to admit, I was shocked by the performance. It's my first SSD and WOW, what a upgrade. I've built systems with SSD's for clients but never bothered to get myself one.

The new board is coming in the mail, no there yet. I got the printer up and running from a different computer remotely... it grabbed the drivers the other computer was using when I linked them up.

So its working on this board... i'm confused on the weak link because it was plugged into all the right places, the samsung magician just says "system not properly optimized"
Without having to do a darn thing on my dads intel lap top "system optimized correctly"
Just very... VERY irritating to me.

Is it safe to say, just go ahead and flash the bios even if its working? As far as I know, pushing this 8350 on this 970 chipset I have had no crashes, or over heats or anything of that sort... however I am not an over clocker...

I did not know about this windows 7 compatibility mode, can you elaborate on that?

If you right-click on the program icon and select "Properties", there is a "Compatibility" tab, and there you will have several options. However, sometimes when a program has compatibility issues, Windows 10 will offer to try compatibility settings automatically. Which usually works great.

If the system is working and stable, don't touch the BIOS. There would be no benefit, but the risk is still there. NO reason to risk bricking the board is everything is working.

The weak link might be the difference between using a SATA 3 and a SATA 2 port. They have difference transfer speeds and the SATA 2 might be holding it back a bit.I wouldn't really worry about it, it'll still be faster than a HDD.

Well, it says i'm plugged into the sata 3... I just looked at my fathers magician on his intel chipset, and checked his read and writes. they are well above the advertised. The thing that drives me nuts is, with him doing NOTHING, with the same drive but installing it and magician, his optimization page says "drive is optimized and working"
On I got well under the advertised speeds, and the optimization screen monitor picuture has the ! on it, and it says your system is not optimized for max performance! It drives me nuts...

Should I update my AHCI and sata controllers? The one windows has its like generic drivers from 2006, like everything windows 10
finds for devices. Is that likely to help? again... THANK YOU Martell1977. Most people don't have time for my ranting BS ; )

Edit: got my new AHCI controllers drivers to work finally. Do you mind if I PM you sometime? Hopefully this tread helped someone.
