I just added an extra storage drive to my system, but can't get it to work. I'm running a Samsung ssd not drive, a Seagate storage hdd, and am trying to add a 3rd drive. It shows correctly in the bios, and not order is correct. When loading the drives in boot, it hangs on the 3rd drive then shows an error of smart command failed then the os won't load. I tried connecting it while Windows was already loaded but it just locks up.

I've tried a few different sata cables, a different line from the psu of sata power connectors, and it's not a limit of the psu (disconnected dvd drive and soundcard with the same result). Any other ideas, or is this hdd DOA? It came from Amazon, unfortunately in a box with some other items in just an anti-static bag. That was my first sign of trouble.

I'm running Windows 7, i5-2500k, 16gb ram, gigabyte z68ma-d2h-b3 rev1.3.

If SMART is enabled and it detects something wrong with the 3rd drive, you might actually have a DOA HDD on your hands. Might want to try to contact the seller and see if they can send a replacement.

Btw, you won't be able to hot-swap a drive in like that with windows already booted up; you would still need to restart the pc and have it boot up normally.

Here is the link to the product page

When it loads, it lists the ssd boot drive pretty much at the same time as the Seagate 2tb storage drive. Then it hangs for about 5 seconds and shows the smart command error for the Seagate 4tb.

I've had the hot swap in Windows work before. I forgot to connect a sata cable and didn't want to reboot. It showed up immediately I'm disc manager. I'm trying to see if it's a capacity limitation of the motherboard, but I don't think it is. There's a utility to install to open 3+ tb. If 3 is the limit.I would imagine they would leave out the +.
