AORUS 1080TI - High Temps?

Hello, I have the AORUS 1080TI (Non-Extreme) and have been running it under load with the default OC mode (1708mhz boost clock) and get temps around 74-82 degrees with fans running at 80-90% by this point. This seems a bit high, and just want to see what kind of temps other people are getting that have this card.

Idk if it is just me, or if these temps are okay? I just know it has hit 84 a few times which is where it will start to throttle, and the reviews I have seen showed much lower than this. Maybe I just have poor case airflow? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Those temps are not dangerous. GPU's typically run hotter than CPU's, and temperatures in the 80's are common. That being said, I've never owed a 1080ti and am not familiar with that cooler, I recommend you look up a review/benchmark of your card and see what temps they got. Otherwise I'm sure someone will jump in this thread that is more familiar with the card.

Unless it is really hot in your room it does sound like a case airflow issue if you are running the fans that high to get those temperatures. Did you take the side panel off your case and see if temperatures change at all? Even with the reference cooler I stay at or under 84c with a max fan speed of 50%.

I will try with the side panel off when I get home. I knew my temps seemed a bit high..

How did that worked out for you?
What kind of temps are you getting and at what resolutions and games?

I am having more or less the same issue. Even though I've improved my case's flow to the near maximum I can (without, perhaps, buying new fans and messing too much with it).
Even made a post a about it

My card seems to want to hug the 80s even though I improved the airflow and my rig is already extremely clean and clutter free. Applying custom fan doesn't help much.

Also Aorus Software seems buggy, won't save it's fans settings on startup, and clashes with MSI AFTERBURNER all the time.

Yes, this is really annoying.
I suspect that the low temps reviewers like Guru3d are reporting are like that because they are testing those cards with open case make-shift pcs - like basically a motherboard ontop a desk with no doors or walls, and probably in a cold country during cold weather.
It's crazy how much turning on the AC in the room affects card temps. Sometimes 5-10c difference.
I currently don't have my air conditioning unit in my gaming room where my PC is located because mine got dead and I am replacing it soon. It's funny, I actually play some games on the big TV screen - which is located in an entirely separated room - across the wall and on the far end of the room. So during the summer - I actually have 2 AC units working - one for me in my TV living/gaming room - and one inside my PC gaming room - even though no living person is sitting there. So basically I care about my PC so much that I turn on AC for it on 23-24c and COLD mode to give it nice cool temps. lol.

But it's kinda disappointing that the Aorus 1080 Ti Xtreme is so freaking hot. Especially with a 3.0 slot (or 2.5slot not sure) sized cooler, that was boasted as basically the best cooler for 1080 Ti's.
Although it could also be that 1080 Ti cards are just freaking hot in general. I tried applying custom fan curve in MSI AB - but it wouldn't change it much, so I don't see the point. It's weird.
I used to have 2 GTX 980 G1 Gaming in SLI - and played at 1440p and they hardly ever crossed the 71-72c at maximum load. Even though they take more space, make more heat, draw more power and reduce the airflow. It doesn't make sense. I was expecting cooler temps than my GTX 980s SLI... :( moving to a single card setup with less power.
Honestly - I never knew the card will take THAT MUCH SPACE in my case too..

How high are your temperatures? I'm in Taiwan so it's roasting here and I'm not always running A/C. My temps don't seem to exceed 80c(I'll check again to make sure) and that's with some overclocking. Still I'm coming from a 1070 which never exceeded 55c on a custom fan curve so it's more than I'm used to.
Edit: just checked again and yeah, highest my temps get are in the high 60s to mid 70s but I do have a custom fan curve and a decent case with plenty of airflow. By the way, I am overclocking and have the power target set to 135%.

My Xtreme is also running high 70's- low 80's with fan speed manually set at 80%. My old GTX 670 SLI setup (TWO cards) never ran this hot and actually consumed more juice between the two of them (according to the specs). FPS are disappointing too- can barely average 80 fps on Rise of the TR on 1440p, while most reviews were claiming nearly a 120fps avg. Thinking it's a bios/Aorus graphics engine issue. Also thinking about an RMA while there's still time.

I've tried everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, from a fresh windows install to reinstalling the Nvidia driver to rolling back to an older version to trying Afterburner and PrecisionX. Tried shutting off firewall and AV program. Tried reinstalling DX and everything else. Tried it with my cpu at stock speed (normally oc'd). Reflashed the card's bios (F4). Tried F3 bios. Even tried under-clocking the card.

I'm sick of working on getting this card right instead of enjoying it- 2 weeks later. An RMA is a pain but for this kind of money I'm not settling. I'm going to contact Gigabyte but from what I've heard I shouldn't expect much.

BTW I have a great case with five fans and again, never had temp/performance issues with my SLI setup- which are known for having issues!

Good luck, sorry I can't help.

Thank you for sharing this. Glad to know I wasn't the only one having such issues.
I've already RMA'd my 1080 Ti Aorus and got a refund. Paid less than 2% cancellation fee which the seller here in Israel charged me for returning a used GPU (Utter B.S since I returned the GPU in a squeaky clean, brand new and in fantastic condition). He wanted to charge me 5% but I talked him down. Was totally worth it.

I've also changed (and hopefully positively upgraded) my case's airflow and cooling by changing from this:

(Moved the 140 mm Noctua NF-A14 upwards to the empty optical drive tunnel - to serve as extra powerful 140mm intake fan
Would love to hear opinions about this! Thanks

Already did that- it didn't solve anything.

What did solve it was:
1) Giving Afterburner another shot (Aorus software is awful at this point). Got it dialed in, stopped monkeying around with voltage curves for now, other than maxing the slider- which does not automatically increase the voltage, it just allows the card to pull it when needed. Temps/fps are where they should be now, 60-70°C gaming @ 80% fan speed. Still fairly quiet.
2) Trying other games. I exclusively played Rise of the TR when I first got the card... found out later the game is widely known to be a mediocre port. A run of the Metro LL benchmark with every setting maxed came back at 118 fps. Was getting 100+ fps in Crysis 3. Card was fine all along- it was software issues.

Bios 4 fixed my fan curve, I had Bios 3 out of the box and avg. temp was ~ 80, highest peak at 85, flash my Bios to 4 and avg. ~ 72, highest peak @ 75. Also the card is at its limit when it's on gaming, OC is just pushing the limit. Try playing it in Gaming mode....

bro use Gigabyte software control over the fan, trust me they are beast at cooling.
my GPU never hit 70 mostly max fan at 50 and stay bw 50-57, with oc maybe 60+ I think which I have not yet done much noob at it.
will think of oc later.
best I say is open the panel and use it.
