ASrock Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K4/D3 compatibility issues?

Recently I bought an I7-7700k and ASrock Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K4/D3 to upgrade my system. The only reason I chose this specific board is because I didn't want to have to upgrade to DDR4 RAM at the same time. I've had to RMA this board once already, but the second board I received seems to have the same problem the first one had. When I press the power switch, the fans will all come on for a second and then turn off, and then when I press it again, they will all come on and stay on, but there is no display. The LED on the motherboard is lit. I figure that it's pretty unlikely to have the same defect on two different boards consecutively, which is why I think it might be a compatibility issue somewhere.

I have benched the motherboard and run it with just CPU and RAM, the same issue occurs, no display, no beeps. When there is no RAM installed it gives three long beeps, so I know the mobo speaker works.

So I guess my question is whether or not I've got another dead motherboard or if I have a hardware compatibility issue.

Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

Solution
You won't even get to the point where you can update the BIOS unless you already have a Skylake chip laying around.

Get a Z270 series motherboard and DDR4 RAM and you'll be all set.

I believe it's just DDR3. So do you think I would be better off just upgrading to DDR4 and finding a different board instead?

Unfortunately (for your budget), but yes. Also, are you aware of the possible BIOS update problem on Z170 boards?

I am aware that I would have to update the BIOS, but I feel like in order to do that I would first have to make it to the BIOS at all.

... and you can't get to BIOS without CPU already supported (assuming it was not already updated in factory) - which would be any SkyLake. So maybe it's not starting because of that. But like I said, even if it would work, performance will be horrible.

My son basically has the same config that you have. Look at the BIOS version on the chips. It is a yellow sticker. My son's version is P1.10. The i7 processor is not recognized. Don't have a lower processor laying around. Contacted Asrock support requesting replacement chips with BIOS version capable of recognizing the i7. Contacted seller also.

Hey I have the same mobo with an i5 7500 Kaby Lake, turns out the mobo has an older BIOS that doesnt support Kaby lakes CPUs. I also turn on my PC and it reboots after 15secs with no video and I have RMAed both the Mobo and the CPU, so tomorrow Ill be trying with a cheap Celeron G3900 to make it to the BIOS and upgrade it. I do have DDR4 RAM though.

Did you manage to fix your problem yet?

Contacted support through email. They requested proof of purchase. Sent proof and received replacement chip within a few days. 15 year old installed with some guidance. Kid was happy. It certainly changed his opinion about my hardware skills. Onto the OS, drivers and software. Unit complete. I would never buy Asrock board.

Nothing to do with Asrock, it's just the way it is with Z170 and Z270. Be glad you were able to do that kind of update.
