Is upgrading my GPU worth it?

Hello, I have i7 6700k so there's not going to be any bottlenecking. Right now I have a gigabyte 980ti, and have gotten an offer on a Zotac gtx 1080 amp ekstreme.

I can sell my 980ti for 385$
and buy the used zotac 1080 for 535$
(The prices has been calculated from dkk to usd)

My GPU is overclocked to 1401 Mhz and has 6gb vram
The 1080 has a clockspeed of 1911 Mhz (not overclocked).

I just want to know if the upgrade is worth the money?

Solution

I knew that (you said DKK). But the 1080 would not match a 1080ti. The TI has more shader units, more texture mapping units, more ram, stock vs stock it as a 30% advantage in FPU, and many other advantages. Also the TI can also be overclocked.

It will definitely be a little faster. But it won't be all that much faster. The only info you didn't include is what resolution and Monitor-hz you play at.

If I can assume 1080p and a standard 60hz, then I'd say it is not worth it. Buy a decent monitor instead.

If on the other had you have 27-32" monitor at either 2560x1440 or above and at 75hz or above then it might be worth it.

If you are on a 21:9 ultra wide it is probably going to be worth it since 3440x1440 at 75hz or above seems to be just a little more than the 980ti can consistently deliver.

If you want more than a modest increase, then the 1080 won't be enough and you'll be back wondering if a 1080ti is enough of an upgrade.

Personally (as a 980ti owner) I wouldn't make that upgrade. The gains are too marginal and the relative cost to do so are typically better spend on other things.

I have a 27" 2560x1440p monitor with 144hz. But how big to you think the difference will be? The clockspeed is a 36% increase, I know that clockspeed isn't everything, but how big to you think the difference will be?

Depending on the game and settings you are much more likely to hit 144hz. But I would still not do it. I run on a 2560x1600 screen and on my 980ti I have to frame limit to keep it at 60FPS (it wants to go over). On most games I get between 80-100 fps on max settings (if I don't lock the frame rate with afterburner). I would guess that with a 1080 I'd get 100-144 fps on the same games with the same MAX settings but only hitting 144fps on older titles.

Game engines aren't getting less complex. Games keep adding new features (HDR is coming, for example).
Also coming soon as even faster "custom" 1080ti's. This would seem to be enough of an upgrade to make maybe sense.

I remain content with the 980ti. I am not currently looking to upgrade because nothing out there makes enough of a difference for me to care. My next upgrade will be in the late fall/early summer when the HDR monitors come out. I will buy a 32" 2560x1440 quantum dot, 100hz. HDR monitor. At that point I will start saving towards a new graphics card as I will have reason to want one.

The thing is that I'm moving out to study in the summer, so this is the only chance to upgrade in the next few years. So you would recommend waiting for a 1080ti? but the value of my 980ti will be even lower at that point, making the upgrade even more expensive...

Anything less than a full generation isn't really worth it. You are the exception. You can belay the cost considerably. That helps but not enough. Add in the warranty window reset and the investment has multiple returns making it a good play imo.

You're upgrade won't be more expensive since the other cards will also drop in value. I still would not do it. Easier to work a few hours a week to save any money that your 980ti might lose. I worked the entire time I went to school, it is possible to do both.

Used cards work well, the one i have now was used too. But I see how that changes things, because the warranty has probably already run out.

Yeah I live in Denmark, so I get a lot of money from the government too, but still the zotac amp ekstreme edition looks awesome on paper, so I thought that maybe it would be as good as a 1080ti.

As an update, I have found a buyer to my GPU, who will pay 463USD and the GPU I was looking at got a price reduction so it now costs 506 USD. So the upgrade cost 43 USD, which I will do.

Amazingly low cost upgrade. Congrats.
