So I am planning on getting either a 1050 ti with a fx 6300 or a 1050 and fx 8320 for 1080p gaming. This seems like the best option for me under 200 bucks but which route should I take. I play stuff like bf4 and fallout 4.

Solution

There's always a bottleneck somewhere :)

The fx 4100 is a weaker cpu, but it still pulls 45-60 fps in both games even at stock. If your goal is 60fps solid then the 8300 will definitely help, in BF4 at least - you won't get 60fps solid in Fallout 4 with any FX cpu, regardless of settings.

$200 could have bought a 4gb rx 480, a card that is miles ahead of the 2gb gtx 1050 and one that would have survived the eventual retirement of that AM3 motherboard.

I can understand the 8300 / 1050 route, it does provide a more balanced system right now. But I also have...

but if you can .. save up a little and get the rx 470 instead of the 1050ti .

If you are able to extend your budget $45, get the i3-6100 and the 1050ti. Or maybe explore the used market. Those two AMD cpus are slow and will bottle neck in most modern games. The 1050ti does ok so long as you are playing 1080p and on a 60hz screen. In fact the 1050ti does really well with just about every modern game so long as 1080p and 60hz. Most games can be played at mostly HIGH graphics settings.

What is your current motherboard?

What are your current specs?
If you've already got a 6300 you don't need to upgrade your CPU for a 1050.
Sounds like this is the best value option.
I wouldn't recommend OCing on that board, just run the chip at stock.
It doesn't support chips over the 8350.

I can understand the 8300 / 1050 route, it does provide a more balanced system right now. But I also have to question the choice of investing $100 in AM3 here in mid 2017, as well as the decision to buy a 2gb gpu in mid 2017 when the option to go 4gb was available.

I mean, OP could have sold his CPU / mobo / ram for $100 and bought a g4560 / mobo / ram for $180...
