How can I prevent Windows from automatically restarting after installing updates?

I initially went to updates to try and disable the PC from automatically shutting down while I am working on a Word Document or an email in Outlook and, there isn't a button to click onto to disable the PC from shutting down unexpectedly. Any ideas would be appreciated as this has happened to me in twice and has caused me to lose whatever I was working on.

I don't have Windows 10 and, am using Windows 7. Care to respond about how to disable my PC from shutting down automatically after Windows has uploaded updates on my PC and, then automatically shuts down my PC without any warning?

I just wanted to commend you for helping me out as it's sure nice to have someone with your capabilities that can provide such excellent information to old guys like me (am 67 and Retired U.S. Air Force) residing permanently overseas and enjoying life with my wife at my side.

it is what we are here to do . i hope this solution works for you . if it does not then please feel free to let us know and we shall find another solution :) most of the time when installing windows or any other program it is better to choose custom or advanced options rather than 'recommended'. it may take a little longer to go through these settings but you will have more control over what is happening .

I use the option "let me choose when to download and install updates", the option just above "Never check for updates (not recommended)." This way I still check the Control Panel and Windows Updates quite often but I have control over when I want to check for updates and ultimately restart my computer. I basically leave it running 24/7 unless I go out of town or if a bad storm is coming in.
