Thinking about upgrading to an intel i7

Hello!

I know some things about PC's but I am not an expert. I was on a budget when I first built my PC so its not insane but I was thinking about upgrading my i5 4690k cpu to a i7 7700k or i7 6700k. I want to upgrade because I have gotten into streaming on twitch and the only game I could run without lag was CS:GO but even CS started to lag after a while. I am temporarily on a break from streaming because I cant play any games without lag and I know the processor is very important when streaming. I would like to play games on stream like H1Z1 and Rust but I cant due to lag. (When I am not streaming I can play H1Z1 with no lag and Rust with occasional frame drops) I am wondering if upgrading to an i7 would help me not lag when streaming.

PC SPECS:

- Intel i5 5690k
- 16 GB RAM
- MSI R9 380 Gaming 4GB Graphics Card
- MSI B85-G43 GAMING LGA 1150 Intel B85 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
- 500W PSU
- 1TB Drive

My main questions are: Would upgrading to an i7 processor stop the lag when streaming? Should I get a 7700 or 6700, because sometimes I see them at different price points and I'm not to sure which would be better in my situation. Do I need to upgrade my graphics card or is it ok to use for streaming?

Any responses would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Depends if you're talking the i7 or i5.

The i5 is being limited y the lack of cores/threads (vs an i7). OCing would help only a tiny amount (that I wouldn't say it's worth it, no).

The i7 on the other hand, with more cores/threads available - OCing may help your performance results (over stock i7 speeds).
The i7 upgrade over the i5 should be a sufficient enough 'boost' for you IMHO

The added HT of an i7 should help with your streaming. There are other reasons you *could* be lagging, but streaming a CPU intensive title will definitely result in lag.

Ok, you're not comparing Apples to Apples.
The 7700 is an i7, the 7600 is an i5.

If you upgrade to a Kabylake (or Skylake) i7, you'll need a new motherboard and DDR4 RAM - which pushes the budget up dramatically.

If I were you, I'd look for a used i7-4790K on eBay. Same platform, same mobo/RAM - and a decent upgrade for your uses.
An i5-4690K is still a quality chip, so you should be able to recoup a good amount from it.

An i7-4790K will cost you somewhere <$340
They're $340 new, so a used one should be available for less

You should be able to sell and i5-4690K for somewhere around $180-$190.

The R9 380 is still a strong GPU - not the best, of course ; but should still be totally capable for your needs.

Ok sounds good I will probably end up going for the i7-4790K as you said. Do you know of any good cpu coolers that are relatively cheap but still good quality? I've been using the stock for my i5 but if I upgrade to an i7 I was considering getting a better cpu cooler than the stock fan to keep temps down when i'm streaming. Thanks!

You don't need to go crazy with a cooler - either a Cryorig H7 or a CM 212 EVO would be my 'budget' suggestions ($25-$40).

You could go up to something like a Noctua NH-D15 if you wanted to but, if you're planning to remain at stock speeds - it would be overkill.

With the 4790K, you'd be looking at somewhere around 90% of the performance of the latest & greatest i7-7700K, for a fraction of the price.
$340 4790K - $180 recouped from selling the 4690K = $160 + Cooler = maybe $200

7700K + Cooler + Z270 board + DDR4 = $ minimum

Ok, would OCing my cpu help with streaming and is it worth it overall to OC?
