So I am looking for a new laptop and what I found is that there is a massive difference in speed between the i7-7700K (desktop version) and i7-7700HQ (laptop version). I can get laptops with either, however, the problem is that all of the available models that I could find (regardless of manufacturer) with the 7700K do not come with other features that I consider absolute must-haves.

So my question is this: how much of a difference will there be, functionally, between the 7700HQ and 7700K, by the following metrics:
1) Resource-intensive performance: I run physics-based simulations as part of my job (think computational fluid dynamics and the like). Will the lower clock speed of the 7700HQ affect how quickly these simulations can run, and by how much?
2) Performance over time: Will getting a 7700K improve the lifetime of my computer? I prefer to buy laptops meant to last 4+ years.

Well the 7700K has roughly twice the TDP of the HQ, so it going to run a lot more hot and use a lot more power meaning less battery life. If your simulations are fully clock speed dependent, than a faster CPU will result in faster times.

I think hte HQ would increase the length of the laptop just because that's what it's meant for and it run with minimal cooling in a small confined area. The 7700K is not, and will suffer heat degradation faster.

Well, airplane seats are too small nowadays to open up a 17" laptop, so battery life is not a problem. As for cooling, I can get a cooling pad to improve the heat removal capacity.
