Suggestions for optimal 1080p processor upgrade

Hello everyone,

My current build runs an fx-9590 and r9 290 both of which are underwater on an open loop.

However, as you probably already know, these components are a little passe, so I'm looking at upgrading with the cpu first on the list.

My setup contains a 1080p 144hz benq monitor for pc gaming and a 1080p TV for home theater and couch gaming.

I also do a fair amount of encoding with handbrake, all at 1080p.

With that all being said, I'm kind of falling into paralysis by analysis, and I don't know what route to take, so I thought I'd ask.

I'd like to take advantage of the 144hz for desktop gaming, but obviously the TV is locked at 60, so it doesn't need to be 100+ frames across the board.

Given that I will be watercooling and can oc without fear, could I get some suggestions for the best direction to head? Do I just shell out for the i7-7700k, or can I get similar results with an overclocked ryzen 5? I'll also be updating the gpu down the road (probably the rx 480 8gb).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, Rzyen didn't become a be-all-end-all kinda thing. Though that doesn't mean it can't hold its ground against the Core i series. You would need a Ryzen 7 1800X or a 1700X(overclocked to 4.0GHz) to compare to the i7-7700K. Which is better? It is hard to say. Though Ryzen 7 would have the luxury of 8 cores and 16 threads, compared to 4 cores and 8 threads of the i7.

To take advantage of the 144Hz monitor, you should get something at around the level of GTX 1070, or sometimes even a RX480 8GB will do. It might also be worth to mention that RX580 has been released recently. That would potentially be a bit better than RX480 and cost less than a GTX 1070.

Thank you very much for that. The main reason I was thinking of the RX 480 8gb was that I could potentially get another one and use crossfire once I felt the time and price was right, but that even with just the one, it would provide a significant boost.

And yeah, I know the 7700k is the best gaming CPU out there, but I thought that it might be overkill, since so many benchmarks and reviews now revolve around gaming at 1440p and 4k, which is why I figured that I could maybe just OC a mid-range CPU and get high fps for 1080p (I mean, my fx-9590 already gets 60 on high settings with most AAA games from 2015 and earlier).

Still, I really appreciate the input, and unless someone has had success with OCing another CPU and hitting the right fps at 1080p, I'll just keep waiting for one of them to go on sale.
