I'm building my first desktop in close to a decade and I have most of it figured out except the CPU and GPU. I'll be using it for general home use, including being the hub of all my media. I don't do any PC gaming but I will be doing some very casual video editing (occasional Windows Movie Maker and Handbrake) and photo editing. Here's the build so far:

Phenteks Enthoo Pro M case
ASRock B250 Pro 4 motherboard
GeIL Evo Potenza 8 GB DDR4 RAM
Seasonic S12II 520W PSU
WD Blue 1 TB 7200 HD

As for the CPU, I've looked up and down the Intel line and narrowed it down to 3 chips:
-Pentium G4560 ($85 Canadian)
-Core i3 7100 ($150)
-Core i5 7500 ($250)

Seeing as the G4560 has 90% of the performance of the i3 7100 for quite a bit less money, I'm pretty much ruling out the 7th gen i3 line. The i5 provides a significant boost in performance but at almost triple the price. For my needs I'm wondering if I'd be better off getting the Pentium with a potential for an i5 upgrade at some point in the future, or just get the i5 now to make it as future proof as possible.

Secondly, it seems to me that integrated graphics would be able to handle my needs and be an improvement over my current laptop (which aso has integrated graphics). On the other hand, if I go with the cheaper Pentium, I could get a respectable GPU within the same budget.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Intel graphics should be fine for what you're asking of it. One important thing to consider is whether any of your editing/encoding programs support AVX instructions, which significantly speed things up, and are the major thing the Pentium lacks when compared with an i3.

Handbrake does, so moving up to a Core processor would help with that. For other programs I use like Movie Maker, Fre:ac Audio Converter or Paint.net, I have no idea.
