Will 2GB ddr3 work properly with ddr3 8GB (same MHz)?

I have an old PC in which I have a ddr3 2GB RAM. I feel like I should upgrade it because it will make the pc useable. I have AMD 3000 onboard graphics. It might help me run some games a little bit better. So the question is if I get a 8GB or ddr3 which matches the same clock speeds will it work? And will it work properly?
I do not like that empty RAM slot.

Solution
The two modules might work together, or not. It depends on the characteristics of the modules (apart from frequency, voltage, and timings).

Also, having 2 GB in one slot (first memory channel), and an 8 GB module in the other slot (second memory channel), makes an unbalanced memory configuration where maximum memory bandwidth is NOT being utilized. Ideally the two modules should be the same capacity, maybe something like 2 x 4 GB modules from a dual channel kit. A dual channel kit will provide modules that are compatible with each other and also provide maximum memory bandwidth.

And being an old computer, it might not work with an 8 GB memory module anyway.

What is the make and model of CPU and the motherboard being used?
