I'm looking for a new graphics card, and I had the GTX 1060 and RX 580 in mind. Both are roughly the same price, but the GTX 1060 is about $20 cheaper. I know the RX 580 is only slightly better, if at all, over the 1060, but I'm more interested in the card's DX12 support making it more future proof. My main concern is the drivers and temperatures of the RX 580. My current system is an i5 6400 + gtx 1050ti + 8gb ddr3 all inside a Rosewill Stryker M case with 2 intake fans and 2 outtake fans. This was my first build, and I loved Geforce experience and I enjoyed the stability of the Nvidia drivers. I would like to get the RX 580, but I have heard bad things about the drivers + AMD software, also the fact that the card can get really hot is standing in the way. What do you think I should upgrade to? Gtx 1060 for $180 or RX 580 for $200,

If that is in fact a **6GB** 1060 for $180 get it, no question, that's an absolute bargain. However, I'm pretty sure you'll find that's a 3GB 1060. Nvidia were pretty dodgy IMHO with the 1060, because the 3GB version as well as having less RAM, is actually a cut down GPU. It's not fully enabled. Similar to how the 470/570 are cut down versions of the 480/580, however AMD gave the card a different name which is more representative of their performance levels.

Anyway.... if you like the Geforce Experience, appreciate the lower power and can get a 6GB 1060 for the same price as a 580 then that's a really solid decision. People can argue back and forth, but really, if they're the same price, neither is a bad choice.

If however you find...

Just read several reviews online. However, i will post my two cents.

GTX 1060: (+) more power efficient (better performance/watt), (+) more mature (nVidia drivers are usually a decision maker), (+) arguably faster in some game titles (GTA V, along with any nVidia endorsed/sponsored game), (-) hotter and noisier

RX 580: (+) great value/alternative to nVidia, (+) new (kappa), (~) pretty much tug-of-war in benchmarks (win some, lose some), (-) high power consumption during gaming, (+) less hot and quieter, (-) refresh of rx 480 (refined), meaning it's just overclocked with additional power 8-pin connector so it can reach higher clockspeeds; (+) decent idle power consumption

if that is the 3gb version of the 1060, then the 580 is significantly better

it is only the 6gb version that is comparable

If however you find you have to pay a little more for a 6GB 1060, then you have a decision to make. Any 580 with a decent aftermarket cooler will NOT run too hot, don't worry about that, the coolers are more than able to handle it. They will however draw quite a bit more power than a 1060 as they're less efficient, I don't know whether that's a concern for you. AMD drivers have been really solid for a while now, at least in my experience, so I wouldn't give too much weight to that metric either.
What's your PSU? Can it safely handle the 580?

As I say - as long as your PSU is up to either card, I really don't think there's a bad choice here. Both are solid cards offering good value for money.

know this thread is kinda long ago but why is refresh of 480 negative? it delievers more performance for same amount of money?

Comparable cards to each other. If you get a 1060, get a 6GB version, the 3GB isn't worth it. But between a 1060 and a RX580, just go with whichever one you can find a better deal on. The 1060 is better on energy use, so if you don't have a great PSU, that might be a determining factor for you.
