After Upgrading to a Ryzen 5 Build today my internet dongle stooped working.

I can install run and monitor the software for my internet dongle. But as soon as i go to connect to it It comes up "The remote computer did not respond. Please retry".

So far I have Tried: Uninstalled and reinstalled Software, downloaded generic software from manufacture, turned off all firewalls/ anti-virus. Reset internet sockets, flushed Ip and DNS, tried different USB ports, uninstalled Lan controller software and reinstalled. Tried dongle on other computers works fine.

Device: Mc760 by Novatel Wireless, carrier Virgin Mobile. Worked on previous build last night, reformatted and fresh install today at friends house came home and it wouldn't work. Computer build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/F6nrXH

I mainly use intel sutff but something I've seen with a couple of different builds.

A. The network adapter driver for the network card(NIC). I know your using USB but I've seen things with Windows 10 where the driver needs to be either updated or reinstalled for any connection to work. WIFI or ehternet.

B. For the Novatel Wireless. Go to the site and check for newer drivers. Many dongles come with drivers but sometimes after a new build you've got to manually install the latest from their site.

that's true, not every USB dongle is plug and play. some require you to install drivers. i had an Asus USB Wi-FI dongle and it came with a driver disk

I have tried both USB 3 ports and regular meaning older USB ports. I will copy out and replace the old novatelwireless drivers from the install and replace it with the newest I can find. I will also look up the nic drivers I used the ones on the disc that came with the board but there might be a better one online. Sorry about the format of this post on a mobile right now.

I updated the Nic driver both by going to the manufacturers website and though windows update. Didn't work, I went to Novatel Wireless's website got updated drivers for the Dongle, Nothing. I googled like crazy found a post on Microsoft's website about people getting error code 633, Which i get when I try to connect in network settings. So i followed the directions of running a verification scan on the processes, Nothing. I stooped the process Name "RasMan", which then changed my problem from "Remote computer did not respond" to "Can not update the address book" So I am making progress I believe.

OK I have tried the dongle in yet another computer running Linux and it worked fine so I have come to the conclusion that it is one of these 2 things:

1. The motherboard for some reason doesn't support USB modems. (less likely)

2. I am running the Windows 10 Creators Update now while all the other computers are running the anniversary update or different OS's. That being said i don't have another Creators update computer to test on.

Sorry I'm kind of out of answers. It sounds like a combo of windows and your MB not co-operating with each other. I agree that the MB wouldn't support the USB/modem. Might want to check and see if the BIOS has some strange setting for network stuff. I doubt it, but maybe.

Well I feel dumb. Found this after finally narrowing it down to the Os:

Creators Update breaks Internet connection
Some users may also experience Internet connection issues after the upgrade. More specifically, users report that their modems can’t establish any Internet connection due to error 633. If you’ve encountered error 633, try uninstalling and reinstalling your modem drivers. Taken from this site:

http://windowsreport.com/windows-10-creators-update-bugs/

Guess now I just have to wait for Microsoft to fix it. Unless you all know of a way to roll back to anniversary update from a clean install of the creators update.

Thank you all for the help narrowing it down to what could be the problem.

I've haven't used them in a really long time but there are options for uninstalling updates. The main problem is that the anniversary, creators, etc. are build updates and they tend to really entrench themselves. Even if you uninstall there's no guarantee you'll get the functionality back. You might, but its not a guarantee.

Well in any case I'm glad you're at least on the right path to fix. They usually get this stuff within a couple of weeks or so. I suggest just keeping checking your sites for driver updates(don't depend on Windows or driver software to tell you).

there may be an option in settings under "startup and recovery" to go back a build but it would try to update to the creators update again eventually

its not windows fault that manufacturers can't keep up with changes and improvements to windows. if you want a solution you will have to contact the manufacturer of your internet dongle to see when or if they will release a fix

The way I have been reading everything I find is Windows new creator update is making a group of modems get the 633 error. I have an open support ticket with Microsoft, I will see if I can find a place to open one with novatelwireless.

I just encountered my own "Creators update" fiasco. I'll be posting a new thread about it next but suffice it to say it broke several NV driver functions in different games.
