I have an ASUS Dual GTX1070 08G graphics card and am considering updating to a 144hz monitor. I am wanting to run this new monitor at the 144hz but clone the display via an HDMI port so I can capture it via my Elgato HD60 Pro at 60 Hz so I can stream. Will this work?

Edit: I should say that I run two different PC's. One for gaming and one for content creation.

Solution

As stated earlier, you can't expect to transfer the same 144Hz refresh rate to a digital display of 60Hz and expect a 144Hz output the other way around. If you do this, you'll be getting 144Hz on your main display, but you'll be streaming at 60Hz because of the input difference. Of course, 60Hz isn't horrible, because it's still 60FPS, but it wouldn't match your optimal 144Hz stream. :)

But will duplicating the display via the HDMI port lock the frame rate?

Thank you for your reply. That was exactly what I was after. I know all about frame rate locks via refresh rate. I am just looking for someone to tell me that the output to the monitor will not be locked to 60 Hz because of the second output via HDMI.
