Is it possible to connect a monitor to my Mobo and make it work with my GPU?

No, this will not work. Once your GPU is connected, the on-board video is shut off. I had to learn this the hard way and ended up getting a DP to HDMI cable.

It most likely won't work. Is there any particular reason you can't plug both into the gpu?

i was just wondering, because i had a monitor left over and a VGA cable so why not try to get a dual monitor setup running

Yeah, it's not going to work. However, you can buy an active adapter, and plug it into your GPU and monitor. Make sure you understand if it is bi-direction or not. For example, I have 3 monitors with HDMI and VGA. But my GPU only supports 1 HDMI and 3 DisplayPorts. So I have to get a DP 2 HDMI. And it ONLY goes that way, not the other way around. But I can use NVIDIA surround if I want. Pretty sure I can use Eyefinity too, but I don't have an AMD card.

If you have a bios that supports it, it will absolutely work. You need to look for a setting in the bios that enables the iGPU. Not all motherboards support this option so it may or may not be possible for you.
