"Ethernet cable unplugged" when switching from 100Mbps to 1.0Gbps full duplex

Hello, community!

I've been stuck on an internet issue lately and I hope you guys can be of help.

Here is my situation:
My internet speed: 200down / 30up
My router: RT-AC1200
My MoBo: Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 7
My OS: Windows 10 (64x)

The problem:
For some reason, my download speed was and still is limited to 100Mbps. Having spent some time on the phone with a guy from my ISP, he made me go to the advanced settings of my network card and change the "Speed and Duplex" option from "100Mbps Full Duplex" to "1.0Gbps Full Duplex", which made sense, except when I changed it, my network card displayed that my ethernet cable was unplugged. It's automatic. The card just stops recognizing any type of connection. The LEDs on the port even stop blinking.

So I'm kind of at a loss here, since my motherboard is clearly able to receive such a signal. Maybe it has something to do with the Bios? I don't know...

I've looked around the internet to no avail and thought maybe this forum was a good next step, since it's helped me countless times in the past.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Solution
Set your ethernet ports to autodetect and leave them alone. There is absolutely no reason to be setting anything manually. Additionally, ensure that you are using either CAT5E or CAT6 cabling (most reliable for gigabit).

Wow. I feel so dumb.

I must've mixed up the wireless and the wired speeds... Plus the guy at Best Buy seemed pretty sure of what he was saying :p

Thank you so much for the fast answer. I'll switch routers and keep you posted!

All right, so.

I switched routers. Dug up my D-Link DIR645, which, according to this (https://www.cnet.com/products/d-link-dir-645-amplifi-whole-home-router-1000/specs/), has the capacity to handle 1Gbps connections (Please correct me if I'm wrong), but I still get the same thing when switching from 100Mbps Full Duplex to 1Gbps.

The ethernet cable is plugged in, but I lose all signal and Windows says it's unplugged.

For some reason, that worked. After resetting everything, having a limited connectivity, swearing a bit, setting all the options on "automatic" and resetting everything again, the connection seems fine. At least for now.

Thank you so much for the help. I will now go stream five different 4K videos on Youtube at the same time, just because I can.

I may have another problem.

The 200mbps worked for some time, but for some reason, I'm now back at 100. Every setting on my PC is on automatic and the weird thing is I'm the only PC on my network that is stuck at 100mbps. Other ones run fine.

I know my router is handling the speed correctly and I know my PC is able to, but I don't have the know-how to fix this...

Any idea?
