Is my CPU dying?

This is probably going to be a long post so please stick with me whilst I try to explain this problem and everything I've been through.

The PC has never been over clocked.

So a few weeks ago I was running Win 7 64 bit mostly playing World of Tanks and watching Twitch streamers.

Then one day Tanks started to crash, sometimes to desktop sometimes the PC froze. As well as this whenever I watched a Twitch stream the PC would lock up and sometimes BSOD. But stuff like YouTube worked fine and I was able to play Doom at full details without a hitch.

Doing the usual, I reinstalled software, made sure drivers were up to scratch. Problem remained.

First thought was my Asus 970 strix was failing, but having onboard gfx I was able to eliminate the card as not being the problem.

After reinstalling the OS the problem remained and I figured I had to start looking at other hardware. I stress tested the PC and memory with software and nothing ever showed a problem. Memtest - cpu stress tests, everything passed.

I went and bought new memory because I'd read that sometimes test software doesn't always pick up the problem.

So with my new memory I was sad to see the problem remained.

Incidentally the PSU is only 3 months old and consider that for the most part the PC was running almost everything else perfectly. Just Tanks and Twitch crashing.

The only clues I had was some info in event viewer that sometimes mentioned:

"A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor"

How maddening can it get...

I bit the bullet and bought a new motherboard, desperate to play Tanks again.

And I bought Windows 10.

So with a clean installation of Win 10, I was delighted to see Twitch TV again and was able to play Tanks again!

Damn motherboard! Would you have thought?

So another 2-3 weeks go by and everything was fine. Then a new game caught my attention Player unknown Battlegrounds.

Started playing it and all was fine. They released an update and I played for 2-3 hours no problem and all of a sudden the game starts to crash. Sometimes to desktop and sometimes completely frozen.

Oh no what now? Reinstall game rinse repeat - problem remained.

From here it got ugly...

I reinstalled Win 10 from my dvd. Cleaned the SSD and away we went, only this time Windows 10 would not install.. it got started then towards the end it BSOD. Each time I retried I would get various BSOD errors.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
SYSTEM SERVICE THREAD...etc

I tried all the tricks to get Windows to go to the repair screen and occasionally it made it but no matter what I do it BSOD at some point.

I removed the GFX disconnected all drives and it was as if the SSD was stuck in a bsod loop because if I only had the Optical Drive connected, the install disk would run fine but obviously I didn't have another ssd or hdd connected so I couldn't actually install. I just did this to see if having just the optical drive would allow the install disk to run.

So I took the SSD over to another PC and used Diskpart to clean it but Win 10 still bsods when I tried to install.

I tried installing Windows from a USB - same problem.

I installed to another older SATA HDD and the cycle repeated just as it did on the SSD.

I basically now cannot get Windows to install at all. Everything I've tried fails with a random BSOD.

Is my CPU failing? Or has my brand new motherboard failed?

Sorry for the long post.

I7 6700k 4.0ghz Lga 1151
Asus z170 pro motherboard
8gb Corsair vengeance
Asus 970 strix

P.S I also ran an Intel cpu diagnostic tool and it passed all tests. Also swapped the memory back to the old memory just to test.

The CPU is technically the oldest now at 15 months. I can try the local repair shop - see if they are willing to test the cpu for me in another rig. Thanks!

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is a BSOD that I have frequently seen when my CPU overclocks were unstable with not enough voltage.

Perhaps your CPU has degraded despite the short 15 months of usage due to prolonged overheating using the stock cooler?

By the nature of this error and the sequence of problems do download HWmonitor/CoreTemp and check your CPU temperatures and run a game. Most likely it could peak into the high 90s at maximum.

To fix this issue, reseat/clean your heatsink and overvolt the CPU by 0.002V to ensure stability. Also recheck the temperatures and make sure it does not rise over 80°C when gaming, this temperature is common for stock CPUs.
100°C is the death zone for Intel CPUs.

Hi kgt,

I think you are absolutely spot on with your diagnosis. I was using a stock cooler for most of its life. I took a bit of a gamble and ordered a new Processor which arrived this morning. Upon removing the old processor, I looked on the underside and where all the pins are shiny gold, in the bottom left corner it had a slightly dulled look, where I assume it had overheated. But despite this the CPU temperature always appeared normal. Amazing that it still ran at all but there you go. Problem solved.. a costly one though! Anyway this CPU is a boxed Intel with 3 year warranty and I've learned never to buy OEM again.
Thanks for your help!
