Red pixel clouds and screen shuddering

I noticed this yesterday and today. occasionally while on the desktop of my PC or using non full screen apps I'll get large clouds of red pixels. at first I thought it was the HDMI cable connecting my monitor and PC I assumed it was coming lose so I grabbed the cable and checked the connections after fiddling with the cable for a few seconds the clouds went away and I thought I had solved the issue. then today after running it for several hours I got a large burst of red pixel clouds followed shortly there after by the image on my screen shuddering and jolting all over the place. before I could react the screen cut to black and I thought my graphics card had died. I waited for a few moments and eventually the image returned I re-checked the cable and lacking any information to go on decided to wait and see. eventually the same thing happend again. red pixel cloud. screen shuddering and image tearing. black screen for several seconds.

at time of writing it has been several minutes since the second gitch and nothing unusual has happend since..

I'm concerned if this is a sign that my graphics card or monitor is about to pack it in.

i should note that I have never experienced anything like this while playing a video game or running a program in full screen. only while things are windowed. though that might just be the luck of the draw.

Post Script: I only thought of this after posting the previous text. when it originally happend I was watching a Youtube video and the video's audio continued as normal. whatever this gitch is it doesn't seem to effect sound.

Theres a couple of possibilites, Google chrome is GPU accelerated so your not out of the woods there yet, and the monitor this is a possibility.

Here's some things you can test, does this happen in games? if yes, I'd assume the gpu is dying. if no, you should be okay, but it is still a possibility.
Test the computer on a different monitor (or tv) if nothing changes then the monitor should be okay, if it continues on the tv it could be two things (hdmi, or gpu).

Ive seen HDMI cables do this, I have one that has done this, so it could just be the cable (This is what I would check first, they're relatively cheap on amazon)

My initial thought is the cable, but after that I would verify the monitor. The worst case scenario is the gpu, but I'm not thinking it's the gpu.

I'd think that it might be the monitor as this only seems to happen on the desktop. the cable is fairly new and I'd be quiet disappointed it a 15 dollar cable broke this fast. the monitor has seen quiet a lot of use over the years and I sadly have no replacement

I currently have two brand new cables that don't work, unfortunately sometimes cables just do come bad.
How old is the monitor though? Have you overclocked the monitor?
I have seen the monitors do it in the past, but when troubleshooting I tend to check the cheaper of the potential issues first. Like I had said though, if you can, test it on a tv or a separate monitor, that should solve whether or not it is the monitor at fault.

the moinitor is pretty old. (almost 10 years) I use it not just for my PC but it also has seen quiet alot of use as a TV.

I'm going to try testing the monitor as a TV with the same cable. if I get the same issue I'll know its one of the two. if not I'll know its the graphics card
