I checked my external hd with the data lifeguard, quick and extended test showed pass but the smart status showed not available and even the capacity was 0gb. Does this mean that the external hard disk can no longer work or totally damaged? thanks!

Solution
Have you tried any sort of usb or dvd boot with any sort of Puppy Linux or other utility that hopefully can pull up that errant HD. And, if that HD comes up, please boot any usb or dvd boot with Macrium Reflect or anything similar and either on-pass sector by sector clone or full image that whole errant HD onto any reliable external HD. Your data may depend upon it.
