Is the GTX 1080 worth it for DSR resolutions on 1080p screen?

Hello there.
I'm builiding a PC, and I could just about afford the GTX 1080.

Thing is, my monitor is a Samsung 23.5" 1080p 60Hz . And I'm not upgrading it anytime soon.

So I know the 1080 might be overkill for it, but what if I use DSR to play at higher resolutions (1440p, 4K) ?
That way I could give the 1080 a more worthy use.

But does DSR really make a big difference in terms of quality compared to 1080p?

You think it's worth it?

The GTX 1080 might last that long. Though if you would just buy a 1060 and upgrade as needed you'll probably end up spending less in the end and have a more powerful graphics card after you upgrade. I would say that by the time you upgrade from the GTX 1060 to a 3060 or whatever they call it you'll have a much more powerful graphics card and you'll have spent less money.

DSR looks a little better if you take the smoothness down to 0% but DSR is certainly not worth spending double on your graphics card for. I'd get a GTX 1060 and play at 1080p. If you really wanted to you could get a GTX 1070 but that would be a tad bit overkill. I would simply play at 1080p and get a GTX 1060 3GB card as it's enough.

Take into consideration that I'm planning to use this PC for a long time without a need to upgrade it. At least for the next 5-6 years. And while for now the 1080 is overkill for 1080p and DSR is better but not worth the money difference, that'll change in the future as games get more demanding.

If I buy a 1060 now I'll have to change it soon if I want to keep playing Ultra/60fps on all games. With the 1080 I can forget about upgrading for a long time.

Is that a good idea?
