2gb *2 vs (4gb *1 + 2gb*1) - Who wins?

First I want to know that pairing a 2gb ddr3 memory with a 4gb ddr3 memory is single or dual channel?

Secondly would it be better to have 4gb *1 + 2gb *1 than having 2gb *2 which is a dual channel.

I know that the bandwidth gets doubled in dual channel but does it really worth it over having 6gb (single channel

Solution
On intel mobos, it'll be in flex mode, 2gb+2gb in dual and the upper 2gb on the 4gb stick in single. Otherwise, it's single.

If you need more then 4gb then the extra ram helps. If on an intel mobo, then you get both advantages, the same 4gb dual and an increase in ram. In most software, the extra bandwidth is negligible in performance.
