lakimens :
That's definitely not okay, it should start throttling at that temp.
Check for dust, replace thermal paste, if that doesn't help, then the CPU is on it's end, it lasted enough.
Respectfully, your advice is good, except for the last ... "if that doesn't help, then the CPU is on it's end, it lasted enough".
High Core temperatures are
not an indication of CPU failure, which is indeed extremely rare.

Your i3 550 is a 32 nanometer Previous (1st) Generation processor, which has a soldered Integrated Heat Spreader, so it's thermal behavior is consistent and predictable, unlike 3rd Generation and later processors.
lakimens is correct that your processor should be throttling. Intel launched your i3 550 in 2010, so:
Are you running the stock cooler?
Is the fan spinning?
Have you cleaned the dust out of the cooler and case?
Has the thermal compound been replaced?
Is the cooler properly and securely seated?
What is your ambient temperature?
Which monitoring utility are you using to measure Core temperature?
