Rx 470/570 vs Rx 570/580 Price to Performance

Hello everyone,
I'm looking to help my friend get an affordable gpu upgrade for him by selling him my R9 380 4gb Sapphire Nitro edition for $100-$120 USD. He basically has to keep his costs under $150 and is really happy with me offering him my current gpu.

As a replacement I'm looking to the new Rx 500 series cards or possibly it's close performing predecessor the Rx 400 series. I'm interested in the Rx 470 and 570 mostly. Particularly with how cheap they can become. I figure I can keep my costs down in my upgrade if I go with these cards.

I know the Rx 480 is a great performer, but I want to know if I should consider a 470/570 if I can snag one for a good price. Currently I'm seeing the 570 about $30 USD cheaper than the 580 and the story is mostly the same for the 400 series variants.

I'm wondering if the Rx 470/570 are worth considering as a potentially better price to performance card, or if the Rx 480/580 are just superior in both performance and price to performance.

Sorry. I don't know why I thought you had a 390 instead of a 380. In that case it will be a more noticeable upgrade. I personally would go with a 480 or 580. The 580 is obviously the best card out of the ones you mentioned but it's going to be tough to find it at a good price until stock catches up with demand.

Thank you. I've been reluctant to trust sites like this. I used to use ones like cpuboss/gpuboss, but when i asked around I found out those sites are very great representations of the hardware. According to the site you linked it seems like the rx 480 would be better. I hope to receive more input from Tom's Hardware's great community.

Better an RX 580 rather than getting a 480.
Since 580 is newly released, its not on the charts.
580 is a little cheaper than the 480
slightly better performance than the rx 480

Yeah I figured I'd probably go for the 580. Maybe spring for the 8gb model. I'm thinking the only way I'll consider the 480 is if vendors like Newegg have a decent sale to get rid of their old Rx 480 stock for a low price, but I doubt it'll be too low. They'll probably mark it as clearance and take off $5.

Between PowerColor and Sapphire I'm assuming Sapphire would be the better one to go with. I'm looking at the cheapest 8gb Rx 580 and it's a tie at $230 USD.

The RX 570 is actually about 5% worse than a 390 on average and the RX 580 is only about 10% better than a 390 on average.

You said you were doing this so your friend could have your 390. If that is the case go ahead and do it. I just wanted to make sure you weren't expecting a noticeable performance increase for yourself.

The answer to this question, is the 470/570 a good buy, is in what kind of performance you require. If the 470 is the least expensive AND it is enough to deliver the performance you need then it's obviously the best buy. There are plenty of benchmarks to let you know what kind of performance you can expect from it. If a 470 won't do it for you, then it doesn't matter if it's less expensive. Before you can say which is better in price/performance, you need to know which ones meet your minimum for performance.

Well I'm always looking for more power to run my games. I'm always a form believer in price to performance. Sometimes it's a matter of getting the best card for your money. Obviously the 480 is better than the 470 but is that difference worth the extra money? Personally I feel like I want more performance than my r9 380 can deliver. At the same time I could meet my need for more gpu power and vastly improve my friend's GPU power by selling my r9 380 to him.

In the past I bought an r9 270 over r9 280 simply because it was a much better value at the time of purchase. I saw the gains but the large price Delta didn't justify it. I'm wondering if it could be a similar case. Although the price gap is quite small between the 470 to 480.
