I want to upgrade my more than 10 year old D-Link modem/router. I have a old PC lying a round that I don't use and I was wondering if I got a multi port NIC I could put PFsense on it and use it as a modem.
What I was wondering was if PFsense can even be used as a modem and not just a router and if would I need a modem card or just the NIC.

Thanks in advance.

Solution
the modem has or a adsl connector or a cablemodem connector

no, you can't convert a pc into a modem, that easily

pfsense is meant for other things, security mostly, other than convert signals form adsl, cablemodem or optical fiber into information that travels into the ethernet cable or wifi

a pc for this purpose will make more noise, consume more watts, space and make more noise than the old dlink

buy a newer dlink or linksys or another brand and if you feel like you want to experiement, use the pfsense after the router but never as a modem replacement
