I'm facing a unique problem in my Compaq 610 laptop, after upgrading RAM. Earlier, only one stick of 2GB RAM was installed
in one of the two available slots. Everything was running okay but had some performance issues. Hence, opted for another
2GB RAM stick with exact same configuration from Amazon. (Compaq 610 can support maximum 4GB RAM, as per manual)
It ran perfectly for couple of weeks, but then I found some of the files in MBR were shown as corrupted during startup. I
ran startup repair and it solved the problem. But, then a new thing happened after few days. This time my Windows 10 OS
reports that it ran into a problem and needs to restart my PC (DPC WATCHDOG VIOLATION! Did all that I could, to resolve
this but nothing worked as mentioned on online forums), while watching a movie and it freezes before showing the DPC
message.
Then, I thought it might be the RAM upgrade that is causing the trouble. I repeat, I haven't faced any issues before this
upgrade, like the ones that I mentioned above. Last year (May), I disassembled my laptop and cleaned every bit of dust
that I possibly could and applied thermal paste on CPUs. Since then, no problem occurred, even though it's close to 8
years old.
Coming to RAM upgrade, I ran memtest86 both from USB and bootable option installed by Ubuntu. In both cases, I found same
results. When I ran memtest86 with ONLY my old 2GB RAM in Slot 1, it passed all tests successfully, same is the case with
Slot 2. The unique case in my tests was (unlike similar cases posted online), memtest86 run successfully with my new 2GB
RAM in both slot 1 and 2 separately.
So, here is the thing: both RAM complete memtest86 tests, whenever they run separately, irrespective of the slots. But,
when they were together, memtest86 shuts down the laptop in between test #6 and test #7. And, I have to manually power it
on.
I tried all possible solutions, heat sink is not that bad and working normally, can still feel the air and tested with a
candle.
Laptop Specs:
Model: HP Compaq 610, 15.6" HD
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T5870
OS: 3 (Ubuntu, Win 10 x64, XP SP3 x32)
RAM: 4 GB (Maximum that it can support)
Temp: Varies between 50 to 80 in both cores 0 and 1
Hoping for a possible solution from the forum!
