Hey guys I am thinking of Installing Linux on my laptop and I'm wondering does it need Antivirus software like windows does? Look forward to hearing from you thanks.

Solution
I'll represent the "no need for AV" camp.
On linux, there are very few native viruses. and those that exist, require a lot of help from user to be installed and actually gain permissions to do some harm.
Why not to install them ? because it's waste of computing resources.

sorry to get in the middle of conversation, but on linux world there is not much of antivirus solutions... I would recommend ClamAV, Bitdefender, avast or Comodo... but I prefer ClamAV. ClamAV is one of the rare AV software that is Opensource, so it's available on many repositories on Linux world. if you use Ubuntu or Fedora, just go to the download centre, you can download it there. ClamAV is for linux what Kaspersky is for windows, it's always ranked on the TOP 5 best antivirus solutions.

My opinion is that because of just a few linux viruses there is no need for resident antivirus shield like on Windows. But you could find useful to have antivirus to check files you are going to share with other users running Windows. Clamav (+ possible with ClamTK GUI) could be enough for this.
