I believe it's DDR2 It's from an old Asus P5B-VM MoBo. I need to upgrade it to 2x4GB but I need to order the right ones. I need the exact specs

<a href="https://ibb.co/ga4E6Q"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/e2UgmQ/KINGSTON_RAM.jpg" alt="KINGSTON_RAM" border="0"></a>

Also do I need to update the BIOS to run a SSD on the P5B-VM?

Thanks

Solution
2 of that kit (for a total of 4 sticks) would be perfect, and the best you can do for your system as far as Ram. I like the SSD choice as well. Enjoy!

I don't think a bios update will matter, although you might want to update the sata drivers if they exist.
Your board looks likes it uses Sata I ports, so your SSD will be bottlenecked by your motherboard a bit, but still much faster than a standard hard drive.

You can run DDR2 at 1066(max) speed, which is seen by the '533' in the kvr model number. it's ddr2, which means double data rate. 533 doubled is 1066 max speed when looking for ram.

I narrowed it down to show only the fastest kits you could use from that bunch. If you are replacing one of a pair of ram sticks, you always want the same speed (or greater, which will default to the slowest ram stick installed).

https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=4GB+DDR2++&N=100007611 600006112&isNodeId=1

You could use any of the kits in your link, but they include slower speed ram and you need to make sure you replace all your current ram with the new ram kit.

Sorry, I didn't look close enough at your mobo specs. You can have up to 4 2GB sticks for a total of 8 (if you have a 64 bit OS). If windows is 32 bit, you can only use 4 Gb, but again using a max of 2GB per dim slot.

Long story short, that kit won't work. If you can find a 4 x2GB (vs this 2 x 4GB kit), you will be ok, if you have 64 bit windows. You can check system->about to find out what version you have.

Not sure if I should start a new thread but since I'm upgrading everything might as well do the CPU I looked at it and it's a Pentium 4 3.20GHz Count 1 (not sure what that is) But I believe it's 32bit What's the faster CPU I could put on that motherboard? The list is so long but not in order of
performancehttps://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5BVM/HelpDesk_CPU/

Preferably from www.newegg.ca/ Since I will order everything all at once Thanks

Or from ebay Core 2 Quad Q6600

core 2 quad is one of the better cpus for your board. Other than a GPU, you will have upgraded your system to the best it can get. Any further improvements would require new motherboard, cpu, and ram as part of the purchase.

Hi I hope jesse_20 you're still around!!! Would any of those 2 sticks work? I contacted Asus but they say it's not on their supported list so they cannot guarantee they will work

http://pilot.search.dell.com/A7068835

2GB DDR2 800 MHz (PC2-6400) CL5 DIMM - Desktop

or

Dell 2GB Certified Memory Module - DDR2 UDIMM 800MHz NON-ECC

One Dell tech support says yes and another one I spoke to says he is not sure!!

Thanks

Any non-overclocked memory should be sufficient. Asus wouldn't certify "Dell" memory since it's from a competitor. But generally speaking, if the voltage and timings of those are similar to approved Ram modules, you should be ok.
Just look into the Dell return policy if you aren't sure.

Ok thanks It's 30 days on RAMs but which one of the 2 should I go for?

Hi again So I made a purchase I went to an electronic store near my place and the guy had a stack of DDR2 RAMS 240pins I got 4 fo $20 Only problem is the computer only sees 7GB total those sticks are 2GB each
Kingston KTO-DM8400C6/2G All the sticks are matching number wise 9905429-008.A04LF
Near the bottom under Asus/ASmobile

Try taking one out at a time and look for a single stick that always registers 1 GB.
So, after removing a stick and the computer reports 6, try taking one of the known 2 GB out and trying the 1GB stick to see if it reports 6 or 7.
Might have a bad stick of ram, but usually the whole stick fails to report.

This so weird now I'm getting 3GB after rebooting the machine!!! Still with the 4 x 2GB sticks Could it be a BIOS option that I can set so it sees all 4 sticks? I think I'm at the latest BIOS Those RAMs are listed as approved from ASUS I'll get in touch with them but if you think of anything let me know I ran out of solutions!!! Thanks

OK, to rule out bad memory vs bad motherboard, take ALL the ram out but 1 stick, start the computer and note the amount of ram detected. If only 1 GB detected, try that stick in every other Dimm slot, rebooting each time, noting the amount detected.
If that stick reports 1 GB in every slot, it's bad.
If total Ram is 2 GB, fine. next step.

Add a second stick to this and note the ram detected after reboot.
Again, if the amount is not now a total of 4gb, try the new stick in the free dimm slots, noting the amount reported each time.
If the total reports 4 GB, add the next stick and follow the previous step to diagnose. You should obviously now see 6 Gb Ram.

Doing this step by step should result in finding a stick (or more) of ram that isn't cooperating, or a bad slot on the motherboard.

OK I'll try that Do I need to follow the coloured buses? In the case of this motherboard it's 1 yellow 2 black 3 yellow 4 black Do I pair the colours first or I go 1,2,3,4?
If that test fail it means there's an issue with the sockets or the motherboard?
Thanks

A single stick can usually go anywhere, the same with 3 sticks. With only 2 sticks, you need to have them in the same color slots, but it shouldn't matter which color, or which slot of a channel if only using a single stick..

If you get a test that shows only a single GB of ram added, try that culprit stick in the system by itself, in each slot, to figure out if it's the memory stick or the board. If it's memory, a single stick should always be reporting 1 GB. If it's the board, a single specific slot would always register as less than actual.

If you get a reading of 3 gb with 2 sticks on one channel, try those same two sticks in the other channel to see if the results are the same.
