Questions concerning bottlenecking

So I'm planning on upgrading my gpu from a 980ti to a 1080ti. I currently have a x99 deluxe II motherboard with a i7-5820k and 16gb of corsair ddr4 dominator platinum. My main concern is the possibility of bottlenecking between the cpu and gpu when upgrading my to the 1080ti. I don't plan on upgrading my processor anytime soon because I'd have to buy another motherboard to get the processor I want.

Should I be concerned?

Agreed, resolution has a lot to do with it. For 1080p it's way overkill. For 1440p it's still potentially a bit overkill depending on the game and how graphics intensive it is. More of a 1440p ultra/4k type card. Gpu's are designed to push pixels, with the wide array of screen resolutions and gpu's, strong gpu's can appear to be a cpu bottleneck simply because the resolution's not enough to push the card to its' max.

Is the 980ti maxed out and holding back your games? Without knowing your setup it's possible but might be worth taking a look using msi afterburner while gaming or try lowering graphics quality and see if fps increase. If not, a more powerful gpu isn't going to offer much benefit. Worth considering before making a...

Alright, thank you!

I'm aiming for 144hz at 1080p. No higher though.

A 7700k might offer a slightly higher minimum and average fps in very CPU heavy games but nothing worth worrying about.
