My son and I have embarked on a gamer PC build. With that said we started to research websites to help us better understand the complexity of the task.

In doing so we ran across this website and really liked what it offered and the knowledgeable community of people.

We've selected a case and are now trying to figure out what to do about a CPU, video card and motherboard.

Our budget ranges between $2,000 and $2,500 to be spent over several months.

Any help / advice you can provide will be helpful. While I'm very familiar with PC's and PC building/repair, it has been many years since I've done any of that and I can see that the game has changed quite a bit since I last dabbled in it.

Thanks

Ok well if is just for gaming the best cpu you can get right now for most games is the i7 7700k its the fastest, you can also go with AMD ryzen 7 to get a lot more cores at a very reasonable price, it will outperform the i7 at some workloads like rendering, encoding and gaming + streaming. depending on the resolution and setting you aim to play at, there are a lot of gpu offers that will do different jobs and some may just be overkill (overprice).

for 1080 resolution a gtx 1060 will be enough for any game 1070 a bit of an overkill and the 1080 its a waste at that small resolution. there are AMD gpu just as good as the nvidia ones i just dont know about them.

The ssd is great choice as it is a lot faster than the old 7200rpm ones, now...

What else you need in that budget, screen(s), keyboard and mouse? sound sytem? we can throw a few builds or you can go to the relative posts about cpu and gpu hierarchy. to figure out whats best, mobo is just about what services you would like to get.

Yes I meant to add that but just forgot. We already have 1 monitor, may add a 2nd not sure yet, and we have all of the peripherals already.

Something to note, the case requires a Micro ATX motherboard. To your point, we did look through some of the threads on the site to better educate ourselves on the process. I can across the PCPartPicker site and began to look at potential configurations.

What I don't know is what brands I should stick to, trying to understand the whole cooling thing (fans, liquid cool etc.) but I figured I'd start with the main pieces like the case, CPU, video and motherboard. For the case I have the HP Omen X case and again it requires the Micro-ATX motherboard.

I was thinking:
- I7 CPU, but wanted some help on good reliable brands for things like video, motherboard, memory, HD etc.

From what I read most people going with SSD drives and then a second 7200 RPM drive. Would it bbe b st to do something like that or go with a couple of SSD drives. I have questions like that that I'm not really sure about.

We donplan to head over to some of the local places like Altex, Fry's, BB etc. I'm hoping we can learn enough to not purchase something they are trying to move vs. something that would make for a nice gaming system.

Let me know your thoughts - Thanks!

The ssd is great choice as it is a lot faster than the old 7200rpm ones, now people get 1 for system and some apps and the mechanical one for storage as its cheaper so you can totally go with multiple ssd if you can afford them, its just faster read and write data transfers.

for brands a lot of people love asus, gigabyte and msi are the most used ones for mobos, there are other brands that you can look at like asrock, zotac, evga, the list goes on and on.

Great, and thanks for the quick run down on things, one more quick question, if I want to also do video editing, which CPU would be best for both gaming and video editing or does it matter?

The i7 7700k is very good for video editing, just get a powerful gpu if you will be doing heavy video editing, and make sure to get a good quality powersupply that can handle all your components, for the power supply i recommend using an EVGA brand, and for the gpu, if you would be gaming at resolutions higher than 1080p, a 1070 or a 1080 is fine. If gaming on a 4k monitor, a 1080TI would be great. But for storage i recommend a 512GB SSD (since you have a large budget) as your main boot drive and storage for game, and a 1tb or 2tb 7200RPM Hard disk for photo, movie, and more storage. For the motherboards, try to get a Z270 motherboard, since it will fit the cpu and has many good features. For the case, you can choose whatever you like, but i don't recommend a case that only can acquire micro atx motherboard, i suggest you change it to a bigger case.

Thanks for the feedback/advice that's helpful. The system is taking shape in my head now, definitely feel better about what to look for As it pertains to a combination of components.

Thanks again
