BIOS temp lower than Windows read outs

Hi

I have recently modified my old rig to be able to mount a Xeon on a 775 socket to extend its lifespan and as testing ground for OC. I am trying to get my son, who is already interested in computers (8 y.o.), to get even more interested in the subject. I decided to use my older rig as a testing ground and a "playground" for him.

Specs:

Intel Xeon x5450@3.00 GHz - OC to 3.6 GHz
EVGA 780i SLI
P10 Bios
8GB DDR2 Kingston @800 MHz
Seagate Barracuda 1TB
2x GeForce 560 Ti 1GB
Corsair H80 AIO Watercooler, push-pull, blowing outside of the case
120mm fan (top of case), blowing inside
120mm fan (side of case), blowing inside

Software used:

RealTemp
CPUID
HWMonitor

Running on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

My issue is that I get a readout in the BIOS that shows temps around 32-35C, but once booted in to Windows, all the monitoring software shows an idle of around 41-45C (cores 0 and 3 are slightly higher - 51C and 45-7C respectively). The OC is stable, no changes to stock voltages. FSB is the only thing that has been bumped.

So I have found numerous threads with the exact opposite scenario - BIOS showing a lot more than the Windows read outs, but failed to find anything similar to the issue I am having. This is not a major issue as under load the CPU does not reach 70C, usually stops heating up at 64-66C but I am baffled by the discrepancy between BIOS and system temp read outs. Especially because all of the posts I could find were the exact opposite to my scenario.

Also, reviews of H80 show a lot lower temps on highly overclocked CPUs comparing to mine. I have read reviews and test results for the cooler on various sites, example below:

http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/corsair_hydro_h80/4.htm

When going back to stock speeds, the temps drop but not as much as I would expect - around 5-7C across all cores. I have reseated the cooler multiple times, reapplied the thermal paste (AS5) using different amounts and methods but without significant changes to the temps.

The pump is not mounted in a standard way as there are parts of the board that block the installation (even though the cooler is compatible with socket, the board architecture is somewhat weird). Two black square components, just above the CPU socket, with capacitor between them are blocking the standard mounting direction:

The pump had to be installed with tubes coming from the bottom, not right side. Not sure if this affects the performance of the cooler or not.

TBH, the thing that bugs me the most is the fact that I have spent $$ on H80 and the difference in temps between it and Ninja Scythe air cooler I had previously does not justify the purchase. I really want to find out that I am doing something wrong (and find a way to fix it), especially after reading H80 test results showing temps in 30C range.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have an 8 year-old asking me questions that I cannot answer (and I am supposed to be the teacher :) )

EDIT: Ambient temp is around 22-23C.

Solution
I would not be too concerned as long as its not overheating and causing throttling or shutdowns

heck I don't think my bios and software is all the same I use hwinfo64 and go by that for everyday need to look monitoring . between the bios and software it maybe on what and where its taking its readings one maybe core temp one maybe socket temps ???

I am not too worried but it bugs me that I've spent money on H80 and I'm not seeing the drop I was expecting to see. If I go by BIOS - yes, the drop is there. OS - barely.

well like the h100 gets a lot of threads here at toms as well on folks not getting the temps from it they expected and for what I see don't seem to be much or any better than a good 30$ air cooler ???

don know if its one of them luck of the draw thing on if you get a good unit or how there being mounted or what ?

''may check your cpu coolers mounting ? its a fine line between excellent cooling or so/so cooling or poor cooling

too little too much paste applied wrong . too loose / too tight , tightened down crooked / uneven , cold plate or cpu lid not flat to mate and may need a bit of lapping to make it so

there a bit more then just slapping a cooler on and having it work great some times and any of them things can be a good swing in nice temps or poor temps

then with a cooler like that h100 what if the pump is not right and may not be running a proper RPM to circulate the coolant through the radiator or the fan on the radiator rpms is not high enough or ramping up in speed as the temps rise to properly cool the liquid ??

then like said above ambient room temps and any air flow combined with any of that ?? ''

I guess I will have to live with it :). I'll try fiddling with the cooler a bit more just to see if it makes any difference.

Thanks for your help.
