Hello guys, so I just bought a new Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 Xtreme 8GB and I was very happy with the results at first, except 5 minutes after I launched GTAV in 4K resolution like I did with my GTX1060 previously, the TV lost signal from my PC.

I thought it could be a driver issue, so I went ahead and did a clean nVidia driver install, but the issue persists.

I ran GPU-Z to monitor temps and logged it, and I found that max temp when I was running the game was 65 degrees celsius, before I lost signal again. The fans were running just fine but the GPU load was close to 100% at 97-98 at some point (and I think that's bad?).

I re-plugged the HDMI cable, the signal came back, and a 'd3d device was removed due to dxgi error device reset' warning showed up, telling me the game crashed, and the PC just continues working normally. I hope I didn't just buy a faulty card. Everything appears to be running just fine as long as I don't run that only game on my PC. Perhaps I'll try out other games when the downloading is done. Maybe it's just GTAV causing all this?

Here's my setup:

CPU: i7-6700@3.4gHz
GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 Xtreme 8GB
MOBO: B150-HD3
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2x8GB
PSU: Thermaltake Smart SE 630W
Storage: Kingston 120gb SSD + ADATA 256gb SSD
Monitor: Samsung 4KTV

Thanks in advance for all your help!!

That's nice. In your position I would go into that negotiation with a clear intent. Because everything is fine with Debug Mode and not fine without it it is the FACTORY applied OC. The Extreme model has increased clocks. Not sure if the OC is only applied to the core clock. Regardless they fudged up. There is a binning...

I blame the cable. I had an identical and dissimilar issue. Similar because losing signal happened with my current TV and dissimilar because instead of losing signal with my last TV it would display this weird snow overlay. The issues carried over from one TV to the next so it's either the cable or the card. I replaced the cable. Issue solved.

For the GPU to be at 99% isn't bad. IT's just running at full power to handle whatever game is being played. At 4K with recent AAA titles that percentage isn't surprising.

The band-aid fix for that error may be to disable your gaming client's in-game overlay. You can always alt+tab out.

Hey there, thanks for the prompt reply, appreciate it!

As a matter of fact, my previous cable did give me trouble and I did the same as you, replaced it with a new one and the issue went away, so I agree the cable could be a reason, though not as likely for now, since this new cable worked fine with my old gpu and TV.

I disabled the in-game overlay and turned down the post-fx option in settings from very high to high, and now I can play for more than 5 mins. I'll keep playing to see if anything shows up again. Thanks again!

Now that you've done that enable the in-game overlay and increase the settings back to high. Play one of the games that were crashing. Still crashing? That is to find out if you can readily reproduce the error. That isolates the issue to the GPU imo. It's a 1080. This isn't a 750Ti. It's co-pilot is the 6700K and not the 6100. If I could duplicate the error I would then open your Nvidia Control Panel by right clicking your desktop and click ing on Nvidia Control Panel. Click on Help(Menu Bar) and then click on Debug mode. You've raised your settings back to very high right? Now try again and see if it crashes again. If it doesn't crash with Debug Mode on the next step is to call Gigabyte and let them know you have a bad card. Explain your troubleshooting steps. Debug mode removes any OC that Gigabyte placed on the GPU after Nvidia was done with it. If debug mode helps then that points to an unstable GPU.

Thanks for the reply, really appreciate it.

As it turns out, in-game overlays don't seem to be the issue, it doesn't matter whether they're turned on, the screen still goes black. So I did what you said, switched to debug mode and tried running the game with in-game overlays on and off. So, apparently it is a OC problem, but I know basically nothing about OC and frankly I don't want to OC anything in my setup. I'll try the other games now since they're finally ready, but I think the results are going to be the same.

When you switched to the debug mode, did your screen still go to black? At this point I'd get in contact with Gigabyte. Customer service: 1 (626) 854-9338

Have you reseated any PCIe connector(s) going to your card? It may be a power issue. If you go into your BIOS under its health monitor the 12V or +12 should be at 12V(+/- .3V). It should not be under that point.

No, everything's fine in debug mode, like how they should have been without it. I'm still hoping it is just a game error but I will consult Gigabyte to see if this should happen at all. Thanks, you've been great help!

EDIT: +12V in BIOS is 12.096V.

That's nice. In your position I would go into that negotiation with a clear intent. Because everything is fine with Debug Mode and not fine without it it is the FACTORY applied OC. The Extreme model has increased clocks. Not sure if the OC is only applied to the core clock. Regardless they fudged up. There is a binning process. They test their GPUs. Can't handle an OC? Founders/reference edition. Can handle an OC? SC or OC edition. Can handle an advanced OC? They place that GPU in their most powerful cards. I assume Xtreme is one of those. It is my thinking the OC wasn't as stable as they thought it was. Everything points to instability that is fixed with the debug mode. Unless they can positively point out another issue I'd insist on an RMA. They will want you to try another PSU to rule out a power issue. However your BIOS numbers rules that out. Then again that's without the GPU under load. Anyways I am glad I could at least find a temp. solution. I hope Gigabyte stands tall with a permanent and satisfactory solution.

Thanks, man, I'll definitely tell the people at Gigabyte what you just told me.

Just a little update: I downclocked the gpu using its own program by 100mHz and the issue is kinda solved as I still haven't seen any blackscreens. I'm currently putting the GPU under load and see what happens, and so far, the game I'm running, with all the shooting and tons of explosions going on, is giving solid 60 fps. Kinda weird.
