Hey guys, I've been trying to figure out the reason I'm getting these crazy high readings in Speccy under CPU temp. Im at the point where I'm going to need some advice from you guys. I just know your basic computer stuff but when I see CPU temp going as high as 106 C I know there is an issue. Appreciate it guys

Solution
this happens when you plug the cpu fan in another connector or is not connected

check that you have connected it in the cpu_fan connector on the mainboard, not in sys_fan

if it really is connected there, try other another fan, and if that doesn't help, try another mainboard

what heatsink do you have?

the mounting system is different and that one could not work

106C is over Tj Max. Too high and can cause damage to your CPU. Shutdown immediately.

Did temps get this high just now or were they always that high? Is this on a computer on which you just did some hardware changes or bought?
Always list system specs along with your question, helps alot.

Techies love juicy details. You can C+P the summary page after you download, install and run https://www.piriform.com/speccy/download That will show us all your parts except for your PSU. You can look at it and tell us its make and model number. Finally you can tell us the program you were using to see that temperature.

I must say that temperature is highly unlikely. That leads me to believe you might have an AMD CPU. A PC should shut down when it reaches the thermal shutoff point which is usually at or near 100C.

If you have an AMD CPU you should be using http://www.amd.com/en-us/innovations/software-technologies/technologies-gaming/over-drive because it deals with margins instead of stright-forward temperatures you might need to take a look over here
http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2122665/understanding-temperature-amd-cpus-apus.html

And now I see you were using Speccy. Yep. AMD CPU. That program likes Intel processors. Sorry about that oversight.

If not it's time for some confirmation. What does HwMonitor say? Similar? Sounds like the heatsink needs to be removed, thermal compound removed and reapplied and heatsink reseated.

Stock cooler or aftermarket?

This has been going on for a few months now, I use to run on high performance in power options but now can only run on power saver and still its 55-65 C. I have a HP 500-164 I got from best buy few years ago. Its a A8-6500 and I put in a evga gtx 960 SC ACX 2.0 4gb and a corsair 600w psu. I understand that its a bottleneck and id upgrade the fans and what not just cant afford it at the moment. I keep my machine as tidy as can be, no dust never, I take it apart monthly and clean it. Like 5 days ago I cleaned and replaced the paste to of no avail. Thanks guys

Don't look at anything for now. Just get a new CPU cooler installed with new thermal compound. If you can check if the CPU cooler is fine, give it a try. I don't recommend starting your PC if it stays at such extreme temperatures.

Well if what im looking at is correct then I should be ok for that being the culprit of this heat, Speccy wasnt accurately giving me the right numbers. The Thermal Margin reading now is 30 C-35 C on high performance chilling on my desktop. Not liking the MHz red numbers

is the temeperature reading real, atm i have a cpu that says that runs at 100°c and is a fake reading

try to touch the heatsink when it says that is that hot, if it is as hot as your hand, the reading is fake, if you feel like your fingers will burn, you need to get a better airflow in the case and a better heatsink for that cpu

try to do this touch cpu heatsink with the computer turned off, i don't want you to get electrocuted or cut a finger with the fan

last night i use hwmonitor in my desktop and every single psu value is wrong, -8 on the 12v! that valuse shouldn't even let the pc turn on, forget gaming for many hours!

these monitors can be wrong

that is why people recomend one or the other and all the time you hear people telling that some of the values should be ignored because some know sensors can be wrong or the app itself could hate the sensor and show fake readings

other sensor on my mainboard shows -28°c

soulds like my chipset is living on the empty cold spce but my cpu is at 100°c

bipolar sensor, mainboard, app or cpu, or all at the same time!

That combo of incorrect readings is hilarious... xD
atleast core temp never let me down. There's a possibility that the sensors aren't working properly.

Physically touching it can be a better way to tell if it's 100C or not.

remember that i know the readings are not real, i still have fingertips and can play for hours and i am not deaf yet, if the readings were real, the noise from the fans would be crazy

i was thinking on this case, buy a coller like this one

http://www.zalman.com/contents/products/view.html?no=347

the readings are fake but if the fan in this cooler decides to believe them, how would be the noise?

ideally most of those coolers will have big fans that will make alot less noise than smaller ones, but still a concern, i think that the problem could apply to the original poster too if he is in the same situation as me

i do watch the tmpin0 and tmpin1, those seem to be mainboard and chipset temp monitors, one i think reflects the real cpu temperature, which is around 50 to 60 under load and on idle can go as low as 30, while watching youtube videos or basic stuff at 40°c more or less

anyone know how bad and noisy is this old one?

http://us.coolermaster.com/product/Detail/cooling/hyper-series/hyper-t2.html

i find it cheap and locally, at around 25 dollars, this kind of parts i like to buy them locally because shipping costs make a 10 dollar part a 25 dollar expense to me for the weight

Last question everyone! When booting the machine I get this error "CPU fan not detected Press F1 to continue" so im looking to buy a new cpu fan but am not sure what size it is. The research ive done is saying its 80mm but other research is saying its 90mm. I had everything set up to buy this one but its on hold until I figure out the correct size.

It was really hard to find one with the little 4 pins. My socket is fm2 msi I believe, its a HP 500-164 a8-6500. Thanks !
