Just got the NVIDIA GTX 1080, worked a bit but froze, lost signal, then stopped working.

Hi there,

I recently built a new PC. Starting from scratch, I only brought over my 2TB hard drive and my Nvidia GTX 960 as both were still good for me. However no matter what I tried, the GTX 960 wouldn't show up in device manager, despite the fans spinning and power clearly working. So I wrote that off.

I recently acquired a new graphics card, the GTX 1080, and it worked. Kind of.. It took a couple restarts to get working, but eventually everything worked and I managed to get on long enough to download the latest drivers. This was on the 2nd time I got the PC working. The first time, the computer froze after 5-10 minuntes. The 2nd time it worked for about 15 and soon lost signal. Since then I've unseated it and plugged everything back in hoping it was a loose cable, but now I'm having the same problem as the 960 where the new card won't even show up in device manager.

I really have no idea why it's not working. The only thing I can think of is I must be breaking them when I install them somehow. I really hope not. Still it was working for a while so it must be fixable.

Thanks in advance.

SPECS:
Intel i7 6700
Nvidia GTX 1080
H110m MSI motherboard
EVGA G2 PSU

It's not the 6700K, just 6700. What's the problem with a H110 chipset? This is my first custom build. Also BIOS is fully updated, though I'll try the output now.

I sure hope not. And it's 650W, sorry I was meant to mention

The H110 chipset is the most entry level chipset out there. I would not recommend buying it for anything but a basic build. You would have been better suited with the H150 or Z170. Normally the lower end chipsets have less compatibility with some components.

That said, it is good it is not a K series. Would have been a waste with that board.

I do agree it sounds like a motherboard issue. Test the onboard video, pull the GPU from the system.

If this is your first custom build, make sure you have standoffs in the proper place for the motherboard and also no extras in places where there are no holes in the motherboard. A short can cause all kinds of issues.

Also verify all the power connections are tight, the motherboard should have 2 (24 pin main power and a 4 or 8 pin EPS) and the GPU should also have 2. Verify they are plugged into the correct ports on the PSU itself as well.

Since it was my first build I did a lot of asking online and this board was recommended since my budget wasn't huge and my focus was more on a good processor. That being said if this motherboard is faulty I have no problems upgrading to the ones you've recommended.

I've been using the onboard graphics for a while now and everything runs completely fine (other than a few crashes when there was too much on screen). As for the rest the PC I made sure to do install everything properly and made sure all the standoffs were in good place. As well as checking the connectors and re-sitting the card.

Thanks for the reply. I'm just very confused as to how it was working for a while and suddenly stopped and vanished from device manager.
