Hello all,

I have never upgraded a processor before, and have only built one PC. My work is currently about to upgrade an old Alienware PC (Don't ask how they ended up with it, long story).

We're trying to get an i7 with the best bang for the buck. Or even just best bang.

Model: OPGRP5
Chipset: Intel Haswell
Southbridge: Intel H87
LPCIO: Fintek F71889A

Please tell me if more information is required. All help and input is much appreciated.

according to the dell website that model used the following CPUs
http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN296934/alienware-x51-r2-system-specifications?lang=EN

Intel® Core™ i3-4150 (Dual Core, 3MB Cache, 3.5 GHz)
Intel® Core™ i5-4430 (Quad Core, 6MB Cache, up to 3.2 GHz w/ Turbo Boost)
Intel® Core™ i5-4460 (Quad Core, 6MB Cache, up to 3.4 GHz w/ Turbo Boost)
Intel® Core™ i7-4770 (Quad Core, 8MB Cache, up to 3.9 GHz w/ Turbo Boost)
Intel® Core™ i7-4790 (Quad Core, 8MB Cache, up to 4.0 GHz w/ Turbo Boost)
Intel® Core™ i7-4790K(Quad Core, 8MB Cache, up to 4.4 GHz w/ Turbo Boost)

So it looks like you are good to use the 4790 or 4790K. Please note since this a H series motherboard you will not be able to overclock which reduces the...
So Haswell Era then. The best you "might" be able to use is the i7-4790K then the i7-4790. But like captain said you need to find out what CPUs that board actually supports as OEMs love to severally limit which CPUs they support to force you into buying a whole new rig instead of just a new CPU.
