So bascially I'm wanting to upgrade my current PC which isn't very good for gaming, and I'm on a budget of about 250-260 USD, I'm kind of new to this so I want to see if I get can the best bang for my buck or so to speak.

My current specs are

R7 240 2gb
8gb ram
AMD Athlon II x2 255 3.1ghz
1TB hdd
770w psu

I guess I don't really need to worry about getting a new hdd, ram or psu. Not sure though

Not sure what the mobo is but I know the socket type is AM3, so I'd want to see if I could get a good AM3 cpu, instead of getting a different socket type cpu and having to get a new mobo.

Guess it's not really a build if I only need like a gpu and cpu :p (maybe mobo)

Solution
two builds but they are both slightly over budget

I would suggest upgrading the cpu to a i3. Ryzen is the only CPU AMD has worth upgrading for gaming. Thus any AM3 isn't worth upgrading and your budget doesn't allow for ryzen 5. You could wait for Ryzen 3 if you wish.

I mean I still need a GPU, the R7 240 isn't the worst but it's pretty bad, or at least when I tested games on in, and I need not worry about ram I don't think.

Are Phenom cpu's any good?

My thuban 6 core is even to slow. Im looking to upgrade to the Ryzen 7 1700 soon as AMD irons out the memory issues. You could add an extra $100 to get a 1050ti or yet released rx560. Any CPU for you motherboard would bottleneck the 1050 or rx550. Best to upgrade that CPU and I wouldnt suggest one of the slower pentium Intels.

I'm gonna go with the second one but with a GTX 750 Ti, I've read that the RX 460 "crashes" alot, plus the 750 is about the same price, or at least on newegg, thanks for the help.

EDIT: Do I really need the RAM? I'd actually like to get a 1050 Ti by not getting the RAM, already have 2x4gb 1600mhz ddr3 corsair vengeance sticks.

Well nevermind about that, it was 50 USD for each stick, I'll just get one 8gb ddr4 2400 stick

i am unaware of any such problems with the rx 460 and before you make a choice i would look up videos on youtube or such sites for comparison between the two in games that you will play.. also make sure the comparison is using the g4560. which will give you a better idea of fps. (not always going to mean you'll achieve the exact same but worth a look)

you need the ram because it is a kaby lake cpu with a b250 motherboard and they require ddr4 ram .

might cost you an extra $35-$50 to go with the 1050ti . it just depends on your personal circumstances. if you're good at saving then i would wait and get either the 1050ti or the rx 470

I've checked benchmarks and such and I'm going with the 2gb version of the RX 460, that should do me good until later this year, then I'll probably go for the RX 470.

i use the rx 480 and i am told that the rx 470 is not that far apart .. and in a few months time hopefully the price will have made it a more achievable goal :) i also use the g4560 and it's the best budget cpu available .

edit: there is very little difference between the pentium g4560 and a core i3 .
