I helped a friend build a computer a while back and he has had a persistent issue of the computer randomly shutting down. It would not power back on immediately (letting is sit for a while would fix it). We have replaced nearly everything except ram, hdd/ssd, and cd drive.

Original specs:
cpu: fx-6300 - with - MasterLiquid 120 All-in-one CPU Liquid Cooler
mobo: Asus M5A78L-M
psu: Corsair CX500 500w 80+ bronze atx12v
gpu: EVGA GT740 superclocked 4gb DDR5
ram: GSkill NS Series 2x4gb ddr3 1333

I thought perhaps it was a faulty mobo interpreting the cpu heat incorrectly and shutting down to prevent damage so we replaced it with the same mobo. - worked for a month or 2 and then started again.

Maybe it's the psu being funky- replaced it with EVGA 850w 80+ gold. No change. We tried underclocking the cpu, playing with voltages, and updating bios same random shut downs.

Maybe that motherboard just doesn't play nice with that cpu? He picked up a Biostar TA970 mobo. Still same problem. Maybe it's just a bad cpu, so he upgraded to fx 8350. He also grabbed an rx480 at some point in there, so

Current system:
cpu-fx8350 - with - MasterLiquid 120 All-in-one CPU Liquid Cooler
mobo Biostar TA970
psu: EVGA 850w 80+ gold
gpu: RX480 8gb
ram: Gskill NS series 2x4gb ddr3 1333

I have looked through forums but cannot find a thing that might be the problem at this point. Any theories or ideas would be amazing <3 I'll try and get you any other info you might want to know.

Well if it has problems getting into windows you may need to create a bootable Hiren's USB to test your parts. This tool allows you to make a few hundred usb tools to test with. Hiren is windowsxp like so it may be the easiest. UBCD is also good but its menu based tests.

I did have him update the bios, at least on the Asus board but I'll see about doing it for the Biostar.

I assumed it was a hardware/bios problem and not drive issue because the errors occur sometimes before even getting to any windows loading screens. If he can get it on long enough to scan though, I'll have him try that.

edit: it also seems weird that it's a bios problem on both boards. I've had 3 or 4 motherboards and never had a bios issue, it seems weird that all 3 of his have had issues.
