Upgrading to MSI GTX 1080 Ti

I want to upgrade my computer with a MSI GTX 1080 Ti card. Is it compatible with my existing hardware? If not, what else should be upgraded?

My current system specs are:
CPU: AMD FX 6300 3.50GHz C6 AM3+ RET
Motherboard:Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3
GPU: GeForce GT 640
RAM: 16 GB
Power:ULTRA ULT-LSP650 650W PSU

Well, the computer is a few years old now and the games I mostly play are older still, so I can manage 1920 x 1080 resolution. I can run some newer games, but at low quality with low FPS. Do you have any recommendations for upgrading the other components?

If you want to upgrade to a 1080 ti, I'd get a build like this

However, you'll also need to be on 1440p 144hz or 4k to make the most of having that graphics card. To be honest if I was in your shoes, I'd upgrade the whole computer to the parts above and switch out the 1080 ti for a GTX 1070 and a 1080p 144hz screen or a GTX 1080 and a 1440p 144hz. The screen is a necessary upgrade if you want to buy a GPU better than a GTX 1060.

Your CPU is far too weak, it will hold back a 1060 let alone a 1080Ti. Also I agree a 1080Ti doesn't make sense for 1080p unless running 144Hz and wanting to run ultra settings. Also your PSU is very low quality which is a concern for any decent gpu.

A i5 or a ryzen 5,7 with a 1070 will be good for 1080p gaming and will last many years. by putting and spending so much on a 1080ti for just 1 monitor even if it was 1440p is not worth it.

But if you have money to spend you could do a compleat rebuild and build a really high end system.

Thank you all for your feedback. A 1080 Ti is a cut above what is necessary for my purposes. Putting a V8 in this golf cart would be a damn shame. It sounds like I would be content with a GTX 1060 instead, just running at 1080p 60 Hz.

@chemmajorp53 Would you edit any of your choices on the pcpartpicker list if the intended GPU was a GTX 1060 instead or are they still appropriate?
