My friend wants to build a PC and he would like some recommendations on parts. He would like the NZXT S340 to be his case, but this can be changed if it turns out too expensive. He would like to run games like GTA V, Overwatch and other modern titles, his budget is $800-900 AUD. Thanks.

i7 or lower but no i3
also phentom x4 will be good of course unlocakble for overcloking
ddr3 4GB in two items
or two 2GB ram's ddr2
(faster by design are ddr3)
best companies so far for ram are : kingston, goodram, hynix
for power source OCZ or Corssair ewentually Seasonic(bronze, silver, gold series)
everything else will be junk no chiftec
all atleast 500 or 600 watt to 850
and even 1200watt
HDD or SSD
SSD can be faster but not live long so buy both
SSD for OS and games loading ,HDD for your precious data
(HDD will be slow for games ,SSD can loose your data)
samsung was sold long time ago so not buy anything of them they was loose quality
no WD green why because green series are "eko" but really extremally slow
WD caviar ok 1TB or more eventually for less expensive 500GB but other series
you can also try barracuda or toshiba but im dont trust them
their HDD in past was have very bad quality and often was damaged by production
SSD of course Kingston and Corssair
no matter what you choose you need good motherboard
http://www.overclock.net/t/1354973/list-of-motherboards-by-overclocking-options
then you need a good cooler
no matter what you choose as socket so far best is zalman ,scythe, arctic
and good choice will be silver thermal paste than junky silicon thermal paste
a Pc box hmm
nothing from modecom
a good Pc box :
be quaiet,silentium,fractal design
corssair should also have good one
video card :
gtx 680,gtx 750 ti
or
Radeon HD 5850, HD 5750
of course you will need change all game settings
and last one keybord,mouse,monitor
lcd monitors : nec,benq,hp 17 inches
and you can also try 20 inches
keybord and mose :
low end : active jet (usb optic mouse),genius
highend razor (everyone recomend it but i never tested you can try)
for mouse important are dpi more dpi faster reaction "office mouse" have 800 dpi
for gamers at least mouse must have 3200 dpi
better are laser mouse but i never see that type popular is optic
thats all .
if you need do greates machine find ranking in web

This would play pretty much anything:

That build seems good would anything be able to be upgraded because he has chosen a different case as it was cheaper at $66

You could upgrade the gpu to an 8gb rx 480?

He should also consider the deepcool tesseract, its a great case for the money:

If there was a bit more in the budget you could consider upgrading the cpu or adding an ssd

For a $1k aud budget I would keep the rx 470 and put in an i5:

This would give you a bit of extra oomph for cpu heavy games like battlefield 1, MMOs, civilization, and even in games that the g4560 does fine in (eg gta5, witcher 3, watch dogs 2) you would notice the difference

Is there a chance that an atx motherboard could be used and an i5 7400 if the atx is too expensive as he wants expandability.

I have told him that the micro-atx board isn't much different and he is ok with it now.

Ok, he likes the i5 build you suggested but with the asrock motherboard and the cooler master case as he likes it.
