Hello!

So I have a r9 290 and it was working just fine for more than 2 years, until I got this today.

Any ideas of how to fix this?

Thanks :(

Hello... Good Job... Well it looks a little better...B D ....B / typically the fan is what fails first on GPU's... even though you see it turning, it might not be able to run at normal/full speed... and the GPU will physically get electron/heat damage to a circuit...

The Next option is to use rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab on the video card connector... give it a clean... and don't screw the card down to the case... let the video card align it's self in the MB slot... there are a lot of very small electrical connection there... make sure the case screw is not angling/forcing the card out of the MB slot.

1) What is the history/specs on your Power Supply? that's a 275 watt GPU B /
2) What is the history/age use of the GPU... Oc'd B /...

Hello,

I already removed the card and then put it back, but still no image. Tried with 2 different monitors, a dvi and a hdmi. Still no results.

Fans are working when booting, but then they stop.

Yes I tried a gtx 1070 and it works just fine. But the r9 290 was working perfectly, idk what happened. If I plug the monitor to the motherboard hdmi port, it works also. So definitely the gpu is the one not working.

Hello... Good info... OK the next thing to TRY bring it back to life is a Firmware flash...
1) Locate proper BIO's/firmware version.
2) locate flasher utility needed.
3) make USB stick bootable.
4) COPY 1&2 to the stick.
5) boot run flash command line ( run/create a autoexec.bat if no display )

Typically the firmware version is on the back of the card...or is listed here. https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/

Do you have a integrated GPU or extra video card slot? so you can have a display to do this? also there are WIN utilities to make this easier too... but would also need a display working where the card is plugged in. B /

Thanks for the answer,

I just finished with the firmware update, but still no image after the windows logo. Right now, I'm using the integrated graphics to test and do stuff. What else can I do?

This is how it looks when booting, and then it goes black.

3) Has the thermal paste dried out between the GPU and Heatsink?

Hey great news, rubbing alcohol actually worked. But then I realized that the fans were not moving, so I tried to set up a speed with my gaming app, and the fans are still not moving. Temp got to 60, so I turned the pc off.

Card is really hot if I touch it.

What should I do?

And btw, thermal paste its almost gone, between the gpu and the fan gpu but I dont know if that has something to do with the fans not working.

My ps is a 850w thermaltake golden.

And I've had the card for 2 years now. 0 problems until now.

Hello... I suspected that... if you love and want to keep the Card... purchase a suitable size 4 pin/wire fan for it... sometimes you can't locate a OEM "orig" Fan... and you have to come up with a 'Custom' install/mounting plan of your own B ) Typically there will be numbers and maker information on the Fan... too google more information about it.

Post digital of the current fan, shroud and Fan size/width for me to look over for you. B / the Fan shroud mounting should release from the main card with a few key screws removed... also remember to unplug the fan from the main body of the card. B o

This is also a time to determine if NEW thermal paste should be purchased or not needed... "is it dried out?" ...also don't try to directly pull the heatsink from the GPU... use a twisting motion to release them safely B )

Well, atm I can't afford to get another card, so I'll need to stick with this one. The weird part is that fans try to move, but they dont fully spin, all of them try to spin. So, I'm afraid that something is not working properly in the card. What do you think?

Fans dont spin, not even when booting anymore. Also, I changed the thermal paste as I had one left from a previous build and now temps are arround 60 c, while browsing.

Tried to manually make the fans move, with the sapphire sowftware, gpuz and amd software, but none of them seems to make them work.

Hello... Yes... fans are a electro-mechanical device... and will fail long before the solid state GPU will... Any 4 wire fan will work with it as a test... just make sure the wire connector size and colors match the original fan connector... Or you can splice the wires from one connector to the other.

1) Do you have a spare or Old intel or AMD CPU fan around?
2) do have a locale Computer re-cycling shop for low cost used parts options?
3) do you have local shop that has a pile of intel/AMD OEM CPU fans in boxes collecting dust?
4) do you have a friend with a spare 4 wire CPU fan laying around?

Basically if you just want to test another 4 pin fan in the GPU this might be a low cost option for your next test. B /

If a replacement fan works in the card... then you can e-mail the maker and see if OEM replacements are available... or then it's customization/mod time with another Fan and mounting design... I had to do this to a many cards in the past. B o
