My problem is somehow difficult to describe, I have searched everywhere for an answer in vain.
I have 2 pcs with 2 lan cards, that I have connected to my Internet router, a 24 MBps Thomson.
Both of them through their on board lan are connected to the internet and I also have connection between them for file sharing. The connection is as slow as the 24MBps router permits and sometimes it floods the router, which needs regularly restarts.
For this reason I have installed on both pcs a second 1 GBit LAN card which I want to use for directly connecting the two pcs and avoid the router completely. For this reason I have connected them with a separate lan cable (not crossover as it is GBit connection) and I am now stuck configuring the new connection.
I need my first lan cards to handle internet connection only and the second ones to only handle file sharing between the two pcs avoiding the router and having a greater transfer rate.
Can anyone help?

Solution
Well, since nobody knows the answer (or care to post it) and as I have found the solution I need with the help of my friend John, I thought I'd post it here and maybe save someone some trouble.
Steps for PC 1
Set ip manually to e.g. 222.222.222.1
255.255.255.0
gateway to e.g. 222.222.222.254 (no hardware gateway exists)
no DNS

Steps for PC 2
Set ip manually to e.g. 222.222.222.2
255.255.255.0
gateway to e.g. 222.222.222.254 (no hardware gateway exists)
no DNS

You also need 2 free gigabit cards (one on every pc)
and a simple LAN cable (not crossover) to connect the two pcs directly.
You should also disable (at first) the firewall on both pcs to verify the connections and then set a firewall IP exception to the two pcs for the other...

I now get speeds up to 70 MB/sec on HDD to HDD transfers (I have not yet tried with SSD to SSD transfer).
