My primary hard drive recently took a dump so I was told I can recover the data, photos etc. by using a docking station and the program called recuva. I've used recuva in the past and was able to recover everything I wanted back. I bought a "All In 1 HDD Docking station, plugged the hard drive into and the only thing that pops up is I need to format disk but when I try to format it after a few minutes it pops up and says can't finish formatting disk. I've tried over and over and same results. I figured if I format it I could recuva to finish up and retrieve my data and photo's. Can someone please further instruct me on this, I'm pulling my hair out.

If you attempt to format the drive, it will erase the existing data. You probably lost all data on that drive.

Recovering data from hard drives is not a simple process most of the time. Sometimes you get lucky, and can get the data back with minimal effort, but it usually involves getting neck-deep in how the drive and file system work. Recuva is meant to recover deleted files, not retrieve data from a damaged drive. For the latter, you should always start with a raw copy to a fresh drive. This will allow you to move all data to a drive that isn't failing. Once that is complete, perform another raw copy from the fresh drive to a second fresh drive, and use the second fresh drive when trying to pull data. This allows you to perfectly preserve as much data as possible.

If you've never dealt with failing hard drives before, you should find a local data recovery company, and have them take a look at the drive if you can afford it.

Sounds like there may be a physical problem with the HDD. As nerd pointed out, formatting the drive will make recovery more difficult (if not impossible with a tool like Recuva).

With the drive in the docking station and connected to your computer, have you run the manufacturer's HDD diagnostic tool (like Seagate's Seatools, for example) to determine the status of the HDD itself?

What make/model is the HDD?

It's a Seagate / Barracuda 7200.9 160 gb. Since this post I tried another program called DMDE. The program scanned the hard drive for three hours and came back with results. However, (not being real computer savvy at this time) I'm trying to figure out how to recover the info off of it. I found this program on this site and thought why not, what do I have to lose at this point. The results list like doc's, jpeg and so fourth. Thank you for the replies. If anyone is familiar with this program I could seriously use some direction towards it. I can't really afford to take it to a data recovery professional. Thank you so much for any help.

I used DMDE but I'm so unsure of how to collect the info and results. I know the HDD is damaged for sure. This all began when I downloaded a drive boost or boost driver, something like that. I started up the stupid program like a idiot and let it do it's thing over night only to come back and find that it had wiped my computer out. I am trying to retrieve at least some data like pass words and other important things. I will try Seatools to see what it comes up with. Please, any further info would be so tremendously appreciated. Thank you so much thus far
